Uniden 325P2 would be an ok place to start, I wouldn't spend a whole bunch of money on an SDS series right now. Listening to local channels will be limited with encryption being implemented very soon.

Depends on if you plan on using scanner as base station or mobile. A BCD996P2 or BCD325P2 would seem to be enough, since not any simulcast in your area, and no simulcast showing on the VIPER system. But I would peruse the available frequencies in your area or area you will be traveling to, before making a final decision. If simulcast shows in any area then an SDS scanner would be called for.

Here is listings for Alamance County.

Graham operates off of the Guilford County system (simulcast), however is near the far easternmost site of the system. The rest of Alamance is on Viper which is not simulcast.

Also keep in mind that all LE in Alamance has been testing encryption lately.

I agree with the reply, below:

Burlington has always had selectable encryption, as has the county for certain talkgroups. They now have selectable encryption for all law enforcement talkgroups in Alamance. You will still hear traffic, but how much directly depends on how many radios have their secure/clear switch in the clear position.

I have not heard anything about encryption for fire/ems.

I’m in Alamance too and have been noticing the same thing. VIPER is fine for now, but Graham being on Guilford’s system makes it a little harder, and with the encryption testing going on it seems like law enforcement channels won’t be monitorable much longer no matter what scanner you get.

Is the Uniden 325p2 hard to program for an old retired novice? My wife wants to listen to the rescue calls as we have several go by everyday. Thanks for any info.

@homebrew3498 I would probably go with an SDS100 or SDS200. They are a little more money, but "buy once, cry once" and are easier to program than the 325P2

Last weekend I noticed a distinct drop in law enforcement activity on my scanners here in southern Alamance county. On Sunday I started monitoring things more closely with DSDPlus, and I can confirm that nearly all law enforcement traffic across the county is fully encrypted now including the talk groups on VIPER and the Burlington and Graham talk groups on the Guilford Simulcast system.

Looks like I'll be clearing my desk soon.

I live in snow camp and I’m experiencing the same thing. The viper groups seem to be gone too.

The VIPER talk groups are still active, but since they're encrypted now your scanner is probably just skipping over them like mine did. Using DSDPlus allowed me to verify this. Fire and EMS talk groups are still clear.
