Hi, I'm going to be going up to Algonquin next weekend and going into the backcountry for 4 days. We're taking the kids with us and I'd like to be prepared if anything were to happen. Anyone know what frequency the outfitters are on? I think I saw a thread with MNR/OPP/Fire/Ambulance freqs in the park, but nothing about actual park staff or Algonquin Outfitters on Opeongo. Thanks in advance.

Check anywhere from 46-48 mhz.

Also http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=2854

Also use these

I think that South Algonquin twsp. Is policed by OPP from Killalloe

Park Staff hang out on the OMNR Low Band system. Channel 9 in particular (46.760MHz, PL of 110.9). This channel is monitored by all Park Wardens / Conservation Officers / Park Facilities (IE, parks offices, maintenance, etc...), also Whitney OPP has their vehicles equipped with a radio on this channel. The OPP Comm Center can also come up on the repeater via a telephone interface - if there's an incident involving something to do with the park, they often come up and announce something like "Attention any Highway 60 Park Wardens, we have a 2 vehicle MVC at KM 35, OPP and Ambulance are enroute". They also use Channel 7 (46.780 PL 110.9) for simplex. There is also a repeater licensed on 46.940, however I've never heard anything on it.

MNR and the Algonquin Outfitters montor Marine Channel 68 (156.425) in Opeongo Lake, though the range is pretty limited - but it's fairly active. I would imagine should you be within the area and something happened, this would be an "okay" way to get help.

Also, I doubt you'd be able to pick this up unless you're in the northern part of the park, but there is still an IMTS system (pre-dates cell phones) that runs on 152.705/153.505/153.395. I heard activity as recently as 2013 on there.

But! Put the radio down and have fun!

Off topic, but incidentally, if you're camping, there is a guy just outside of Whitney that will let you fill your trunk for something like $15. 188 Paradise Road, Whitney.

The park is one place I would not go this time of year with the forest fire risk being so high. There area already 2-3 fires burning in the park.

Is Algonquin Forest Authority still active in low-band in the area? I still have a low-band antenna here (old commercial sleeve dipole) and used to hear them, forgot the frequencies but in the 47MHz range.

Dave

Partly answered my own question, they are licensed on 47.27/29/62/64 just wonder what the activity level is.

Or 46.170 I think.

The correct ones are in the database.

Yes I remember 46.17 which was barely receivable here; in the RRDB but not listed in IC search.

I'm also recalling MNR activity of 47.07 repeater (also listed in RRDB) and 47.19 during firefighting, some air-ground activity with water-bombers.

I haven't heard 47.07 active for a while. However 46.580 & 46.700 have been active around pembroke lately with the Algonquin Park fires.

There were four new forest fires in the Northeast Region by late afternoon, August 11.

Fires of note:

Algonquin Park 20 is not under control at 30 hectares. The 6 crews committed to this fire are working to contain it. Water bombers were utilized both today and yesterday to aid with suppressing this fire. Algonquin Park staff have indicated that all affected areas will be evacuated by the evening hours. The fire is located on the shore of Opeongo Lake.

I added bold emphasis in the quote as you are interested in that location.

Not Opeongo but High Falls (east) area

The MNR made a mistake that has now been corrected. The fire was not on Lake Opeongo but is near High Falls Lake on the East side of Algonquin Park. There was a very little (under .1 hectare) fire on Lake Opeongo that was quickly put out. There are no fires on Lake Opeongo currently. There is a fire ban in the park though so please be respectful and do not have any fires.

Algonquin Outfitters on Lake Opeongo is open for business as usual.
