Alpha text missing on some IDs (396XT)

I have a whole slew of new talk groups loaded from RR onto my 396XT via FreeScan.

From time to time, one talk group comes up as numeric only, "ID:39420 39420" or something similar, with no text. It's the same on the display, Virtual control, and Log Viewer from the scanner.

On UniTracker, it shows the assigned text name under "Audience" for the same ID. I see names for the exact same ID number, and they both sourced from RR.

I would have thought the name would download from RR along with the Talkgroup ID, no?
Are some alpha names not displayed on the radio?

Are you sure you're seeing a talkgroup ID #, and not a Unit ID #? Unit ID's refer to the individual radios being transmitted from (not the talkgroup they are assigned to). Unit ID's display as a number by default.

What are some of the talkgroups you are referring to?

If you program in a Talk group ID # with no alpha tags the Alpha tag will default to ID:12345. If there is a just a space or other odd character in the software program text label for that TGID it may default to displaying no name since the spaces or odd character are all that is displayed.

Thanks! I suspect it was a tag with an unprintable, or... it's possibly related to my other question.. Could it have been in "ID SEARCH" instead of "ID SCAN" mode? Would it show "ID:12345" in that case?

I'm pretty sure it was a TG ID, since it was a match for what was showing in UniTracker at the time.

I have to say, for someone trying to figure this all out, it sure is nice having UniTracker running at the same time.. shows the big simultaneous picture while the scanner tunes and displays a little at a time.

If you had the scanner in ID Search mode, then any received TGID that is not programmed into your scanner will display as a number.

HINT (shortcut): when in ID search mode, when the scanner stops on an unidentified TGID (displayed as a number), you can press the "E" button to quickly assign an alpha tag to it.

By the way, I think you mean "UniTrunker" (you keep referring to it as "UniTracker").
