I only have had my SDS100 for about 3 weeks, but I have noticed two issues, so far. One has been discussed about problems with the Uniden plug-in P/S be underpowered. My Samsung 2A P/S is a fine temporary replacement. I will be addressing that.

But the unit I have has a very unusual looking display when it is off. It "appears like it has a screen protector on its face/lens and that it is poorly adhered to the lens along the periphery and where there "appears" to be a small air bubble (see pic). Does anyone else see anything similar on their display. Is that really what I should expect? I am sorry if this has been discussed before. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Pic of your SDS100? THANKS!

I think they ship with a thin film over the display, as do many electronic devices. Did you remove it?

sallen07...... Yes, I deserve the chuckles.:) But I promise I tried. It was so perfectly cut to the size of the glass that I couldn't get an edge. So.... I ruled it out. But I have learned from you to let the "them" down easy. I will remember that well. Got it!

Now, how do I predate and delete this post! :giggle:

THANK YOU!

If only I had that tab! :D
I agree that a tab on the protective film would have made it so much easier. But as other SDS100 owners would tell you, no tab. Tnx!

Use gorilla tape as a tab and then give it a pull. Do not use objects at all.

Did you purchase your SDS100 brand new from a reputable dealer? That definitely looks like an aftermarket screen protector applied by a previous owner. When factory new units are shipped, they have a very thin piece of film over the display that overlaps the screen area by quite a wide margin, and is extremely obvious as something you should remove when unpacking the scanner. There is also a good sized, very noticeable tab to pull on, and it peels off very easily.

The new SDS100 units I have purchased all look like the ones in these videos.

Could it be that you got a used or refurbished unit that a previous owner put on a custom cut screen protector?

Check these unboxing videos:

I have gone for extended periods of time with film attached to various electronics. In one case, I called Midland Radio and asked them why I could not get the icon to leave, LOL. I was so damn embarrassed when they said, "Did you remove the sticker? There is printing on it."

Thanks fxdscan!

You made my day. I DID NOT get that extra-large screen protector with the scanner as shown on your videos! I think you hit the nail right on the head. I won’t say who the dealer is, but they were recommended to me. I have already contacted them and they gave me a Ticket Number and asked that I speak with their on-line live help assistants (hmmmm). They assured me that they will stand behind the product.

There IS a screen protector on the display, but NOT the one they would have expected. I have asked for assurance that it was not a return. Working on it.

I appreciate your taking the time for your detailed response/feedback. I will keep you informed!

Best Regards!

That was great advice. Used a tape similar to Gorilla tape. Worked great. Chatting with the distributor about this mystery screen protector..

Thanks!

Please let us know how it turns out, and if they agree that it's not a new unit that you paid for. You can give them a link to this thread so they can see the replies and the pictures.

A fly in the ointment!

I took a pair of interesting pics that I would like your opinion on. One contains the serial as displayed on the SDS100 scanner's display. The other has the serial number as seen within the cavity of the scanner under the battery. The two serial numbers are different. Would you mind looking to see if there are similar differences on a unit you have (If you still have them)? It seems odd to me. I have a bad feeling.......SDS100 Different Ser# IDs 3X5.jpg

THANK YOU AGAIN!

The one on the left is the ESN. You use it for upgrades. This is normal and it is the same serial number. The 260 replaces the Z and 0FE is the checksum.

Uh, no they aren't. The one on the display is what Uniden calls the ESN ... the "Z" in the serial number is replaced with 260. The three digits after the ESN are the checksum, and not part of the serial.

You should also be made aware of:

When you register your scanner on my.uniden.com, part of the process is to provide the ESN. in your case, you will see, outside the ESN entry line that the 3832 is already there, thus you only enter the digits. 6018006640. On the next line you enter the 3 character 0FE (zero, not capital letter "o") which is the checksum.

Then if you buy one or more of the upgrades, you will get a # that you enter under the upgrade menu for whichever upgrade you bought. That # is keyed to the ESN and won't work on any other scanner.

You cannot erase those upgrades if it needs repair where the motherboard needs replaced, Uniden will create and install the proper keys so you don't lose your upgrades.

This is the kind of stuff that can drive some folks into paranoia. If you have any doubt that you received a new unit, I would simply return it for a refund and buy a unit from a different distributor. I always use Amazon or Walmart, since they have very liberal return policies. Lest you will be living with this nagging doubt infinitum.

New radio's I've bought usually have a little tab sticking out to remove that film.

Yeah, no tab. That happens with a lot of stuff. I find using a piece of duct tape pressed to the film and then lifted straight up makes short order of removing it... without fear of scratching the plastic.
