COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- A 19-year-old Commerce City Police Department Explorer and her front seat passenger were injured Thursday when she drove into the path of a Northglenn Ambulance.

As officers arrived on scene they discovered the two vehicles off the roadway sitting on the grass at Monaco Park. Both vehicles had severe damage.

Witnesses told officers that the ambulance was eastbound on East 56th Avenue, approaching Magnolia Street, when a Ford Taurus attempted to make a left-hand turn and drove into the path of the ambulance.

The ambulance, which was not responding to a call and had the right of way, struck the Ford Taurus on the driver's side of the vehicle.

The female driver of the Ford Taurus suffered severe injuries. A front seat passenger was also injured in the accident, which occurred just after 2 p.m.

There were three emergency medical technicians inside the Northglenn Ambulance at the time of the crash. One was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries, the other two were not injured.

The Commerce City accident investigation team is looking into the accident.

The investigation is ongoing to determine what charges will be filed, if any.

Names are not being released pending notification of family.

Youch. I presume an ambulance, given it's a hefty truck with a hefty box on the back, carries quite a bit of inertia. Bummer that both agencies will lose a chunk of their budget to replace the vehicles.
