So I get my insider e-mail yesterday, and like last year, it is dissappointing. Why can't they get some US airpower up here and put on a good show. Most who go to airshows go for the shock and awe so to speak.......If they want to get young folk into the hobby and make things interesting, they need to start bringing in some better aircraft..... Lineup below... Even though I complain, I still go! :)

Here is the Official 2012 CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL AIR SHOW LINE-UP!!!

The sky will be filled with a 9-ship display of pride, precision & control ...
your Canadian Forces Snowbirds!

I do appreciate the effort the organizers and volunteers put forward as alot of work is involved. I am just saying they seriously need to mix up the aircraft as the same planes come year after year. I have a feeling it has to do with the noise complaints they get every year from residents in the area. They try to keep the jet traffic down to a minimum.

Look at 2009, they had the Raptor, F-16 Viper Demo, USN F-18, Blue Angels. Was the best show in probably the last 20 years of going there

The line-up doesn't seem much different from US air shows. I am not sure what you have issues with? The upcoming Chicago Air & water show usually has as its headliners, either the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds, a number of aerobatic teams, military fly by
by F-15s, Fa-18s, C-130s, a B-2, B-1 or a B-52... in flight air refueling demo.. etc.. Not all that much different.

Thunder over Michigan was last weekend. It's not too long of a drive to enjoy some good ol' yankee style air superiority.

I must agree with 02. Yes, it takes time and effort to organize the event, but it seems predictable and repetative. The last few years I've been hanging out at rwy 23, it's cool that they fly around a bit before they land - if ya want a CF18 haircut, that's where ya wanna be, they're that low off the end of the rwy !!! And yes, the car alarms prove it ! I think more can be done to put this airshow on the map.

A couple of years ago, the CIAS sent out a questionaire. I replied and suggest they include some stuff from our Commonwealth boss, the RAF. How about a Harrier or a Tornado. Both were here when they had the static display in 1997, which was my other suggestion, getting up close and personal with some stuff. Was anyone there in 1997 at the old Canadian Airlines hangar ? F15 (or 14) cockpit sit-ins, boot camp for the kiddies. They towed the A10 right through the crowd, the wings right over you.

Path, I was there that year....Unfortunately after 9/11 insurance rates skyrocketed and alot of ground displays were cancelled. The ultimate for me was the London (Ontario) airshow in the early 90's I went every year faithful. I remember it was the anniversary of the F-16 one year, and another year it was the F-15. I swear, getting there the day before I would see, 20 to 30 F-15's alone coming in for the show, It looked like a flight line at an air force base. The highlight was when the 2 Ukranian Mig 29's made their appearance, the first time in canada after communism crumbled. They were absoultely insane, and the exhaust resembled that of an F-4 phantom!

I have noticed a pattern with the CIAS....about every 5 years you get a stellar show. Last was in 09' I just do not understand why they cannot secure with so much lead time....planes like the Harrier, B2, B1 (nothing like being Blown by the BONE), B52, F4, etc. When I was there last year I heard some of the younger people in the crowd saying....ok this is totally boring.......They really need to up the jet's for the younger crowd who go there to see that, otherwise they are losing out on an entire generation who have no interest in slow, propeller aircraft. We all like seeing the Lancaster go by, or a nice P51 Mustang....But nothing beats the chest rattling of 4 afterburners on the B1-B.

:)

I must say, the Blue Angels made the show a few years ago, listening to them on the scanner was a hoot too:D. When they came behind us without knowing you would drop to the ground in fear when they passed hehehe.

I also agree with 02 when looking at the line up, was kind of disappointed as well. They need to bring some serious air power to make things exciting at this air show.

Oh ya, I forgot to mention that the Raptor that year was amazing as well, the power of that bird was incredible!

As long as they don't leave another Nimrod at the bottom of Lake Ontario.

TORONTO AIR SHOW CRASH - YouTube

BTW, forgot to mention - I was at the waterfront watching the show when that happened. Had a huge crowd gather around me, straining to hear the air boss and the TPS marine units off my Pro-43's. TPS had to detain some pleasure boaters who had scooped souvenirs off the water's surface.

Yeah, I was there that year as well. That was especially sad as there were dignitaries in the Nimrod in addition to the crew. I think 7 or 8 persished in that crash if I recall correctly. The pilot stalled the plane and didnt have quite enough altitude to recover. He was almost level with engines at full when they hit. if they only had a couple hundred more feet they would have recovered I think.

But it's true, CIAS have a good show once about every 5 years. last time I was there it was for the F-22 and haven't felt it to be worth it to go back since.

The consistently good show was always the "old" Hamilton airshow. Lots of variety in the air as well as significant static displays. The other bonus was you were able to get pretty close to the flight line, as they allowed seating almost right at the edge of the runway. When that F-4 screamed by you with full afterburners, you knew you were getting your money's worth.

Yes I remember those London shows fondly.
IIRC the year the Mig 29's were there there was also a stealth bomber on static display with a brief fly over by one which never touched ground at London.

Tillsonburg is having two airshows in August. On the 18th is the regular show and on the 29th the Snowbirds fly (instead of in Brantford). Looking forward to monitoring the coms on the 29th.

airshow

last year i was at the cias on the lake front the f-18 was coming into centre stage and air boss reminded him to keep the noise down. then he got mad and returned back to airport and landed early. now we love the airshow and the jets and the noise they make. why is the airshow commity listening to the people who hate airshow and not to the airshow lovers like us. bring on the f-18 f-15 f-16 f-4 f-22 full after burners and f*** the people who hate the show. WE are the one to keep the cias alive. why hold a airshow if no one is watching. who ever has a scanner and going to the show this year listen to the tower and if they tell the jets to keep the noise down then something has to be done to save OUR airshow in TORONTO I will be there...................

Not just for CIAS but for all airshows, maybe if the gov't would get the Snowbirds some new wings then maybe, just maybe, it might stimulate all airshow enthusiasts to want to attend more airshows.

No disrespect to the Snowbirds of course, as I'm amazed they can still keep them in the air, and no question the plane is well suited to it's task, but as an airshow enthusiast myself I honestly have to say that I don't feel as much pride anymore in watching them as I think I would if they had some decent equipment.

Not lack of pride for the team of course but more of an embarrased feeling about our gov't and their lack of support for what are truly one of the top ambassadors of our country to the world.

I know the subject crops up every now and again but geeeeez...... couldn't they at least give em L-29's or sumptin'..........just sayin'.

What happened to the ct-15 hawk that was being talked about as a replacement?

London used to put on a really good show before everything got messed up after 9/11. I used to take the day off work before the show to sit out at the end of the airport and watch them come in... A buddy of mine had a contact within the tower so he could get me the heads up of what was coming and when. I got some great footage of a Hornet messing around and doing some touch and go's....and yes, the car alarms in the area were not too happy!

Forts, I think I saw you there, lol.

My fondest memory was diving by the end of the runway and looking out my truck window only to see the F18 Tomcat pulling straight up. I was looking right up the jet exhaust. The London Air show was the best, too bad it had to end the year I move here, such is life.
