AZ DOT has shut down Grand Avenue between 59 and 67 Avenues. BNSF has shut down train operations along the parallel track. It is anticipated to last until 'Zero Dark tomorrow'.

Why does Phoenix get so many of these?

Glendale FD reported that the fire started in a semi truck, and spread. What caused the semi to catch fire wasn't yet known.
The building that caught fire was full of roofing material, insulation, and likely other building material.

Why does Phoenix get so many of these?

It is hot here. When the ambient temperature is say 110º F, the inside of a vehicle can hit up around 140º to 150º F. The concrete or asphalt can hit similar temperatures. Glass can act as a magnifying agent and cause ignition in some materials. Recyclers also have to take some of the blame, since they pack materials and substances together in close proximity.

The tractor trailer parked there supposedly had waste cooking oil in it and it supposedly exploded. That caught a plastic-dense fireground on fire and it took off from there. A proximal business was reportedly a dog food processor and biomaterials will burn rather well - like a grease fire with high enough temperatures.

As lithium ion batteries die off in autos, trucks, and other applications; Phoenix will get more of these fires thanks to the dry climate that prevents corrosion in autos and has been beloved by auto junkyards and restorers for decades.

Hot spots rekindling. I don't think they've closed the incident since it started. Earlier, it was just Glendale PD. Now, at 2:17pm, it's Glendale PD and APS.
