I have had a Long Wire connected to Ant 3 as suggested by the user manual.

I am finding, another radio I have, has better reception using the same antenna.
So I have connected the Long Wire to Ant 1 and are getting better reception there.

Question:
Why would this be, and is this likely to cause any problem to the radio, used in this manor?

Ant1 and 2 are 50 Ohm impedance. Ant3 has a 500 Ohm impedance. I guess your long wire just happens to pair better with the lower impedance port for the frequencies you are listening to. The antenna should work equally well on Ant 1 and 2. So if you listen above 30 MHz then it more sense to move the long wire to Ant2 so that you can use a higher frequency antenna on Ant1. As you probably know, Ant1 is the only antenna that is in use > 30 MHz.

There is no problem with using this antenna on any of the ports.

for reception only, there are no "rules".
any piece of metal receives RF, just some are better than others.
use whatever works best for you.

This isn’t really true.

The “rules” for receiving are the same as for transmission regarding the antenna and impedance matching, although somewhat less critical since damage will not occur if a receiving antenna is mismatched.

However, efficiency, power transfer and general performance is governed by the same parameters; antenna aperture, coupling and matching are all important. Whilst you can get adequate performance with a random wire the matching is still key as the port switching comparisons demonstrate.

there can be rules, but they don't have to be followed.
for whatever reason odd things work.
my 396T handheld, with a radio shack 800 Mhz antenna works fine receiving the space station on the 145 Mhz band and over 700 land miles away (past cuba)
for transmitting, yes the rules should be followed. for reception a paper clip is recommended for simulcast problems.
