The cliff notes version is a through hole NMO (New motorola MOunt) gives the antenna the electrical ground plane it needs to function its best and a large threaded base to withstand wind force.

Standard hole size is 3/4", but you can get it in 3/8".

You can also get NMO with a lip mount so you will not need to drill a hole .. just tiny ones. Sometimes people get sqimish talking about drilling a hole in ones ride. But lemme tell you, NMO is the way to go.

I'm like you, didn't want to drill any holes in truck,,, so I use a dual suction cup mount on back window with the Radio shack 800mhz rubber duckie antenna,,, does good to, I was amazed,,, can pick up police fire and emergency for better than 30 miles away,,,,,

I have been told that some of the state natural resources wardens have their various antennas mounted on the side swinging lids of the full width tool box in the pickup bed just behind the cab. This not only provides protection from overhead obstructions off-road, but still provides a good platform for RF transfer. The box and lids are both web strap grounded to the pickup box with heavy hardware and the leads are run through a 3 inch grommet at the back of the tool box, through the pickup box and into the cab behind the rear jump seats. Haven't seen one of these up close, but this came from a reliable source.
