New to scanning but need help please. I have a Uniden HP 2 also a Whistler TRX-1 that I want to mount 2 separate antennas on the gable end of my garage and house to pickup signal better. Can someone suggest a good antenna. I want to be able to take either unit from house to garage to plug in. Also will I need to ground the antennas. I live in the Flint, MI area.

rob,

You can look at "log periodic", "discone" and "yagi" antennas for scanners at any of the ham radio supply shops on the Internet. Do a "scanner antenna" Google search if you like. There are some smaller companies which make excellent antennas too. There are plans on the Internet where you can reuse a conventional, outdoor t.v. antenna for scanner use. Plans exist for making your own scanner antenna via any of the above formulations.

I have a Diamond discone antenna, up about 20' on a mast. We've had 70 MPH gusts up here, with the antenna still in place. Been on that mast for over 10 years...no problems so far. I'm using LMR 400 in a 100' length.

Try: https://www.dxengineering.com/
https://www.hamradio.com/

That should get you jump started.

I'm assuming you're monitoring MPSCS (700/800 MHz)? If so, do you know if they're using simulcast in your area and how many tower/antenna sites are in your vicinity? Are you having a weak signal problem or simulcast distortion?
