MON-31? Isn't that the base antenna? Can you provide a pic please ;)?

You are correct. MONR31 is the base station version while MONR51 is the mobile magnet mount version. I posted full descriptions and pictures of the various Antenna Specialists Monitor models in post #12 of this thread dated 07-23-2012.

For informational purposes on the Antenna Specialists Monitor series of antennas, the last models made were as follows:

MON731 base station version (left picture below) which replaced the MONR31
MON751 magnet mount version (middle picture below) which replaced the MONR51
MON752 trunk lid mount version (right picture below) which replaced the MON-52

All of these antennas had an updated design and used components from the Antenna Specialists Mosaic series of antennas. They were only made for a relatively few years until they were all discontinued in October 2005 after PCTEL bought out Antenna Specialists. The 2005 PCTEL/Antenna Specialists catalog lists all of these antennas as covering 25-50 MHz, 150-195 MHz, 450-512 MHz and 806-894 MHz. The base station version accepted an N connector and the mobile versions came with 12 feet of RG-58/U coax terminated in a BNC connector. The retail selling prices of these antennas ranged from $100 to $130 depending on the model and the selling dealer.

Its odd they would put a spring on a base model.

trp2525,

Wow, you really know your MON's! You are a wealth of info on these classic and AMAZING antennas.

Actually, I cannot make that statement about the MON-7XX Series, only the older ones MONR33, MONR51, MON-52, MON-53) because I have had all of those in the past, and have lucked into a bunch of them (almost all NIB) in the past few months. I guard them like gold!

Anyway, I wonder why they took the “Micro-Choke” off these later 7XX Series…..?? I have compared my MONR33 (no choke) to my MON-52 and MON-53 (both with choke) and I DO notice a marked difference in 800MHz reception – much less “crackle” with the ones that have the Micro-Choke.

It looks like all they did was slap a MON751 whip on the base setup and called it a MON731. Didn’t they do that with the MON-58? That looks like a MON-52/MON-53 whip on a base setup.

The Antenna Specialists MON-53 is a deck mount mobile scanner antenna (see attached picture). Here is the word-for-word description of the MON-53 from a 2001 Antenna Specialists catalog that I have:

"Deck (flat surface) mounting base for permanent
installation. Requires 3/8" hole. 17' cable. Includes
exclusive MICRO-CHOKE for pin-point resonance
at 800 MHz for maximum range monitoring."

Because the MON-53 threads on to any standard NMO mount, you can use it with any NMO magnetic mount, trunk lid mount, base station ground plane mount, etc. Also antennas are designed to receive a specific frequency band(s) and don't care if the received signals are analog or digital (P25 for example as you asked about).
