I think we've all been there. At some point, one has to stop reading, and gather up their own experience.
Too true.

I'm on my fourth HF antenna so far this year. I started with a shortened trap dipole for 40-75m, switched to a multi-band off-center fed dipole, switched to a full-size trap dipole for 40-75m, and now I have a fan dipole for 40-75m. As we used to say when I worked in product testing "at some point, you have to shoot the engineers and ship the product".

I think we've all been there. At some point, one has to stop reading, and gather up their own experience. It's part of the secret plan - the trick is to keep it fun while learning, otherwise nobody gets on the air and all we do is talk about it in forums (as good as they are). Nobody calls CQ, the band is dead, where are they??? On the keyboards theorizing.

Quick tip - your pixel loop does not need to be that high. About a radius above ground will be fine, unless you are trying to dx line-of-sight locals. They generally have a high angle lobe anyway on skywave, and low-angle reception is well-attenuated - although the outstanding s/n ratio makes for this a bit.

Also, before planting your vertical (whatever it ends up being), doing a site-survey with a battery-operated sw receiver can be beneficial, as in a suburban environment, a few feet either way can make a difference if you are plagued by noise fields - and as a small loop owner you know the difference between a good S/N ratio, and just pegging the s-meter. You can't work 'em if you can't hear 'em. You may even be able to incorporate the two with an antenna in a bad location for transmit, and the loop on rx in some circumstances.

A noise check is a very good idea, but the OP may be limited as to where he can hide his antenna, still, if there is one noisy area, maybe he can stay away from it.

I'm one of the lucky one's and live in a very low noise area. Couple that with the fact that the Gap antenna being a vertical dipole is quite a bit quieter than most other verticals. My noise level does not even show up at times, other times it's a 1 or 2, pretty darn lucky huh ?

If only all of you could live within reasonable driving distance. I would love to spend a day just absorbing what you know. Thanks to all of you for the input. You have all helped immeasurably. In the spirit of reciprocity, if I had your kids in my 8th grade history class, i'd give them extra credit points for the help you've provided ; )

Chrissim - just be sure I'm not trying to drive you away from the forums, it was just an observation that I noticed in myself. :)

Another tip since you are using the small loop - you may want to initially leave it disconnected / unpowered if your new antenna is somewhat close to it. A small loop works in a current-only mode, and can produce some big current from nearby transmitters, which *could* burn out your preamp in the loop itself, or possibly the rx it is attached to. Not a guarantee that it will, but just be cautious when you do fire up.

At the end of the day, you just do the best with what you have. If that means nothing more than say a mobile hamstick with only two radials, then so be it. At least you'll know how that performs, and depending on other factors, you may be surprised. (although in that circumstance I'd elevate the two radials at least a foot above ground, or at least at the ends.)

As W9BU points out, this will NOT be the only antenna you play with. Enjoy the ride and know that there will always be something bigger, badder, and better than what you have, whether you spend $6 on wire, or $6K on a monster array. Someone has something better. :)
