How can you program it without the database, either in EZ scan, or the scanner.

Enter the data manually into EZScan (copy and paste at use here). You do not need the RR database to program your scanner. It is optional.

But ... I don't want to hijack the thread. Back to regular programming please.

mine says it checks for CPU FIRMWARE UPDATES and dsp updates library update and pc application updates if you go to the library it and everything else is from RadioRefrence this site right here NOTHING !!! IS DOWNLOADED FROM THE RS site so anyone buying the pro668 will be fine :O) HAPPY SCANNING.

Regardless of what CPU and DSP updates will be released for the 1080 you will not see them made available for the 668 unless RadioShack approves them. Just because you can check for updates does not guarantee that there will be any. Whistler has confirmed to several people including myself that as long as RadioShack is open they are not allowed to do any repairs or firmware upgrades on any of the 668 scanners without receiving permission and even if they do close they would still not be allowed to do anything on their own unless RS signs over all of the intellectual property rights to the Pro 6XX Series of scanners. As far as the database that is released weekly that contains all of the scanner frequencies and information from radio reference that should be good for the foreseeable future.

This is a situation that the owners of the 651 who goofed up there firmware are experiencing as we speak. RadioShack is now refusing to accept any scanners for repair regardless of current warranty status and since Whistler has not been given approval by RadioShack they are having to tell people no as well.

To the original post that started this thread. As someone who has had to send his 1080 in for a repair I would say without a doubt go Whistler. So far it seems like people that are experiencing issues are few and far between but spending this much money do you really want to take the chance. I can honestly say that all of my interactions with them have been very kind and pleasant and have nothing but good things to say.

I would be willing to bet that eventually, it might take some time, that Whistler will do repairs on GRE radios, for a reasonable fee. Since the 106/651 is basically identical to the WS1040 and still in production, parts should be easy to get, and the 668 should fall into the same category.

Since the 668 is a PSR-800, and it's a pretty mature product updates that really matter aren't going to be coming as they've mostly been done already, I bought a 668 without many worries about problems, it works great.
