Any Analog Frequencies Remaining in Jackson County?

My neighbor handed me an analog BC346XT handheld scanner from 2009 and asked me to program all the interesting frequencies for Jackson county Michigan. He moved here from Texas. Looks like the whole Michigan public safety sector has gone over to digital MPSCS and except for airport, weather, and ham repeaters, he is out of luck. Is that correct? Anything else interesting I could program on analog for him? The neighbor is going to ask if he should buy a digital-capable scanner. How much of Jackson county police, fire, and other emergency services have gone encrypted?

Welcome to the forums!

The database shows that Jackson County and City PD Dispatch and some other law enforcement talkgroups on MPSCS are currently in the clear to receive. Talkgroups with Mode DE are fully encrypted and cannot be received by any scanner. Fire and EMS are in the clear.

The Jackson County site on MPSCS is Simulcast. The only scanners specifically designed to receive simulcast sites are the Uniden SDS100 handheld and SDS200 base/mobile. Any other scanner may experience simulcast distortion depending upon its location in relation to the towers. That results in missed transmissions and garbled audio.

The link above is Jackson County for the VHF/UHF freqs. You can try programming them to see if anything can be listened to.
The 2nd link is for Jackson Co. airport.

You might be able to try some freqs from Washtenaw & Calhoun counties also.

As of right now no, there are no VHF public safety related frequencies - they have entirely migrated to MPSCS.

In addition I'm working right now to update the MPSCS entries for Jackson Co. I know there's a large amount of unused or incorrect TGs listed in the database.

Additionally could you update the analog for Jackson for what's not in use, etc. Thanks!

Unfortunately I'm only aware of the public safety related information - I can't speak for any of the school or other local government entries.
