Buy the RS USB Cable 20-047, then try one of the computer programs like WIN or ARC for free downloads for thirty days. Once you do computer programming with these programs
you will be amazed. Its like waking up from the stone age. Also read through the Newbie scanner forum on RR for programming, operational advice and just plain old tips.

iam new to scanners and way over my head with pro-197 any easy way to progam? thanks

Win500, the USB programming cable (part# 20-047), plus your premium subscription. Import your conventional frequencies and trunked systems via the software and RR. Upload them to the scanner. Just make sure that you pick your scanlists for where you want what, label them, and you're ready to scan! No easier way than that:)

You will find easy to follow illustrated instructions for using WIN500 programming here. As Larry says, it's a snap. You can populate your scanner in a matter of minutes.

The Pro-197 without a programming cable and software would be an absolute nightmare to program!

I already had the cable for a Pro-97 and the software (Win500) was only $35 to register. Like they said, you can try them for 30 days and pick the one you like the most (probably Win500) before you pay to register. I am biased. I had Win97 for my Pro-97 and already was leaning toward Win500 when I got the scanner.

I was monitoring within an hour and have been tweaking my settings ever since.
