Tall ships parade in Newport, RI.

I went to Jamestown, RI for some diving last weekend to find the Parking Lots full and I couldn't get near the water due to the tall ships parade. So I said screw it and found a secluded cliff at Ft Wetherill and enjoyed the parade and listened to all the boat drama with the PRO-97.

What a day it was controling the secured areas with the CG fying back and forth and harbor masters keeping the ports and channels clear and orderly, minor boat collisons, and a few tows on disabled boats.

The CG was also doing search patterns in GPS South of Newport (Ocean Road I think) looking for a lost freediver from the day before (I dont think he made it and my heart goes out to his family and freinds).

From the cliff it looked a crazy sight to see. All these boats squeezed up and down the east passage 3 times.

Your more than welcome; Dave thanks for the kind comment. Why I brought my scanner and camera along, I dont know; but it was nice to turn a bad situation (not diving) into something interesting.

Something more of interest and nice to hear was a motorist was reported to be throwing litter out of her car window without a care and the RI - Charleston police chased her down took it serious and nailed her.

Those are beautiful! Wish I was there.
You were very lucky to catch those photos. I like the middle one the most.

I like the middle the best also. Thats a little island at Ft Wetherill Jamestown and the sides (cliff) of it drop down to 85 ft with a huge wall of anemones. If we were to have an emergency accent we'd be in the middle of the traffic or may I say armada. You can actually see that island in the very first few minutes of the movie "Americas Cup".

Do you have any more pics of the ships. If you do. I would like to see them. I'm a photographer and I love seeing coastal/boat pics. The tall ships make those even better.

Here are 2 more W5T

One is the Newport Bridge taken from Jamestown and the other is the Queen Mary from her 2004 visit to Newport that also filled the parking lots but not as bad as the tall ships.

Nice shots, Chris.

I remember when the QM2 was visiting Newport. I was working at the Navy lab in Middletown at the time, and my wife and I went to Newport to watch the 4th of July fireworks. It was said that the city spent double of it's usual amount on fireworks due to some cash influx from the QM2 being in town.

Also, my lab overlooked the bay, so when the tall ship parade took place as they left for the next city, everyone in my department would gather on the west side of the building to watch them go by. Who needs productivity in government employment!

Lol caylorman. Nice to work with a nice view. My buddy works across the passages at NOAA near URI and always has a neat sighting to talk about such as the barge that sank off Beavertail a year or 2 ago. Made for a nice wreck dive.

It appears all the main activity took place on standard CG channels and standard misc marine channels.

Unfortunately, there is nothing "standard" for Coast Guard channels, as they change designators and frequencies. "Standard Marine VHF" is simple. O well.

Marine 16

The VHF Marine channel plan is a World Wide standard.

Ch.16 is 156.8000 World Wide as the Emergency Channel.

You must of missed all the CG traffic in the 162-174 mhz band then.

I guess I did then. The scanner was very active and though. I would have liked to have picked up the helo's

Could you give me a link or point to a reference were I can see for myself major and important CG frequncies being in the 162 to 174 range as neither the Pro-97 the preprogrammed nor the GC page http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/marcomms/vhf.htm references frequecies in those ranges. NOAA weather is in those ranges but I cant see anything else important.
