This list is current. I've used it only yesterday while monitoring on a mutual aid response . Most police departments rarely (if ever) change their radio codes without some monster of a reason . Just confuses everyone. There are enuf problems with different coding structures between contiguous municipalities. A 644 in Newark means shots fired. In another town, it could mean that the officer has "to go potty". So much for interoperable understanding.

That is why it should all be "clear text". You can alway understand "shots fired" instead of trying to figure out what a "644" is.

That was included in the next cycle's Homeland Security Grant specs under the heading of NIMS compliance and communications interoperability. National cop and fire associations have not stopped *****ing about it. Violated their autonomy and "home rule". Unfortunately, Mike Chertoff (the poster child for bulemia)has bowed to the political pressure and backed off on shutting off their annual delivery of 55 gallon barrels filled with 50's and 100 dollar bills. Go figger!

There's nothing wrong with them using their own codes on their own frequencies. But, when working with another agency, plain speech should be used.

BTW, the code list in the RR Database is not 100% up to date. I've heard them use codes that aren't on that list.

That point has been well and repeatedly stated from the 9-11 Commission report onward. The simple fact that DHS was pushing was that people will continue to do in an emergency what they do on a day-to-day basis. It is a human frailty. From my years as an Operations Point Man for ICS and JFO's (domestically and elsewhere), there is a lot of truth to the statement. Confusion regarding use of codes in mutual aid is a constant problem, especially in larger events involving three, five, or more responder agencies. Chertoff's committee has thought (based on the committee testimony), that getting plain language into day to day use would begin to erode this historical (and sometimes hysterical) problem. As us field command types accept, you win a few and sometimes you lose the rest." Often, reality bytes (mis-spelling intentional) and logic does not always rule the day..

Exactly, I always hear them use codes that are not on that list. Also, there are typos like "Investication" and "Prisner Run". I'm not here to cocmplain about typos, I just don't think the list is accurate.

I listen to Newark PD often so I will try to compose a list of the codes I hear that are not on the list but I will have to guess the meanings based on the given descriptions. If anyone has any other codes they hear on Newark PD and wish to share them please post them here =)
