Anyone hear of Marine radios used for hunting?

I was told that in Chase county in KS people use marine radios for hunting all the time and has been doing it for the past 20 yrs!!!! And to think when i got there to watch trains i never thought to scan the marine channels out in the Flint Hills.
a ham told me about this. he talked to someone that has a radio. he started asking questions because of the obvious marine antenna on the guys truck. the guy got real quiet at first and started talked quiet about it and said he can talk over 50 miles with it. so the ham guy told him about a 5/8 wave larsen with a ground plane would give him a 100 miles being sarcastic to his stupidity back to him. :lol:

Yea Hunters and pouchers use them in Northern Michigan. Michigan DNR also monitors those freqs.
Was talking to one near the cabin and he had a marine radio scanning the freqs.

He said they catch more poucher this way than any other way

isn't that something? Doesn't the FCC even realize this is going on? Lots of people use radios illegally for hunting. why doesn't the FCC just make a hunting radio like they have marine radios to eliminate this problem? That pains me when people are using a radio for a service that has nothing to do with what is for. marine means on water not in the woods. how dum can people get?

Just as long as they aren't too close to one of the Great Lakes. Interesting. I'll have to scan those freqs next time I'm up 'nort.

FWIW, Cabela's has got 'em in their catalog which isn't really chalked full of other 'marine' gear. Mostly hunting.

The Coyote hunters around here use marine radios all the time. Seems to be a group of several local farmers. I have even heard the USCG Chicago run them off of channel 16 during band openings. There is also a large church that uses them for something or other on some Sundays.

FCC enforcement is very far from what it once was... With that said, the FCC has allocated spectrum for activities such as hunting. It exists in Class D CB, FRS, and GMRS.

Unfortunately they get used for all sorts of Purposes.

Many of them Illegal, not just Hunting, but years ago we [New England] had some ATM HiJackers who would use the Marine Radios [B&E Radio Shack] to coordinate cut'n the power/phone lines [Alarms] and then monitor the PD on the Scanner. Took awhile, but they finally caught them.

If it doesn't relate to your Boating, then your use of them is likely illegal.

Mostly CB and FRS used around here. You cant use radio's in pursuit of most game only a couple of species, such as coyotes. There really is no need for any long distance comm's most are only a few miles at most, people watching the perimeter and ones on foot with the dogs.

Most states have a very liberal season on them, some even pay a small bounty on them. They are known for killing small livestock, and even pets out of yards.

Here in Kansas it's especially productive to monitor the marine freqs. in winter when the lakes are deserted. Nearly any use of this band at that time turns out to be illegal. I've heard private detectives use them along with various apparently criminal enterprises in the Kansas City area.

Those hams are pretty nosey ... when I was in nursing school a buddy and I (both hams) found an out of the way freq. to talk on when doing our course work. It was something oddball like 145,822.5 khz, we were only a few miles apart, and we talked only late-late at night, 2 - 3am. Wouldn't you know, word got back to us that there were a bunch of guys who really enjoyed listening to our chats about prostates, hemorrhoids, and gawd knows what all. They said that they learned a lot!

The Ham bands are not the place to do this as the KiloCycle cops will get them as they have been doing to the Indianapolis Police for years due to their "tac" radios. (see the thread about IMPD tac radios, but this is not the first time IMPD has been caught, more like the third time) Using Marine radios inland is pretty safe. We had one guy here that had a duplex phone patch in the marine band for over 15 years. Just learn to stay away from channels that the CG will hear you on during band openings like the local coyote hunters did.

I understand that some bear hunters in northern SC use marine freqs to coordinate. I have never bothered to monitor and see. My hunting partner and I use MURS freqs for our sometimes group hunts.

Two watts VHF seems to do okay in the woods. Not like a repeater, but still pretty good.
