My Father was on that C-130 out of Selfridge. I was only 1 at the time, so if anyone has any information on it I would appreciate anything you could pass along or anywhere I may be able to find information.

I read in this thread that someone's mom was the MP that secured the sight. And something about a Dep that was on the scene. If you gentlemen read this, I would love to be put in touch with those people.

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend.

Yes, I remember

I just ran across this thread about the C-130 crash in Imlay Co. In 1975. My husband died in the crash and I'm wondering what your is your interest in it.

My husband was the captain, Laird Simpson. The propeller shaft broke on one inboard engine and the prop came through the fusillage, hitting the copilot and severing the hydraulic lines, then exited on the other side to knock out the other inboard engine. The cockpit crew kept the plane aloft by opening cans of hydraulic fuel and pouring it into the severed lines. They were coming in for an emergency landing and almost made it when debris took out an outboard engine and they hit a line of trees. The tail broke off on landing with your father, the loadmaster, inside. My husband, and the other cockpit crew were dead when rescue people got there, but it's my understanding your father lived for a week before he died from the burns.
I never met the rest of the crew or their families, so I can't tell you about your father. I'm so sorry that you did not know him. My daughter was born 7 months later and it was a great loss to her to have never known her father.

My father was not the one that survived for a week, although I too have heard there was a crew member that had. The weird thing was that my dad actually filled in for a friend on that flight to get more training hours.

Thank you for responding. 7 years ago I had tried to get a reunion of the families together for a 30 year remembrance, but could not locate any of the families. My email is blang013@yahoo.com should you care to keep in touch.

Thank you, Bob.

That is a weird thing about your dad filling in for someone else. Another weird thing is that it was to be my husband's last flight before transferring to a Minnesota unit.

Thank you for the email address. I will send you a message that way.

I researched the C-130 crash a few years ago. An old friend of mine was baling hay at the time. He saw a group of C-130's that day, but didn't pay much attention, as they flew quite often in that area. He recalled later that he saw alot of smoke, thinking it was a barn that caught on fire. He said the smoke wasn't black, but kind of gray, like maybe it was a barn full of hay. We took a little ride out in the country and he pointed out approximately where the plane went down. I've placemarked it on Google Earth:

Lattitude 43° 5'32.51"N
Longitude 83° 1'42.16"W

I have a newspaper archived article (pdf format) on my other computer about the crash...

My dad was the flight engineer. I was 8 years old when it happened.Sometimes it seems like such a long time ago, but then sometimes if seems like it were just yesterday. Some of our family still lives in the area. I am now in Jacksonville, FL.

C-130 Plane Crash - July 1975

I was working at Hangar 36 that night.

I knew everyone on that plane. I still live with the horror of that evening.

I would love to hear from anyone -- family members, friends, anyone.

I'd especially like to hear from the family of the flight engineer, Ed.

I am the nephew of Hugh Graham and can still remember walking around the wreckage at age 5. Our family was from the thumb area and I'd always been told that one of our relatives was first on the scene and recognized Hugh right away. I'd be happy to speak to my aunt and find out if she'd like to speak to any of the other families/friends that would like to discuss this topic. I am thankful to read the posts recalling the accident, so thank you all for contributing.
