I purchased a 3000A along with the AOR Searchlight software back in the mid 90's. I uses an IBM Thinkpad that was running Windows 3.1 which worked fine. I now am attempting to get the 3000A and the software to run on a not so old laptop that has XP as its operating system. I have gone into the device manager for the laptop and made the settings of 4800 8 None and 1 to match the software. The RS232 cable is a straight thru as required. The device manager says the laptop RS232 DB9 connector is port 1 which I have set the same in the software of Searchlight. The radio is not responding to the commands. Any suggestions here with what should be working is not. I tried a different cable and no luck. Searchlight boots up just like it did on the other computer using Windows 3.1.

Yup, did that, checked the RS232 cables all ok, even changed the tiny dip switch under the front panel back to 4800 baud still no luck. Were you using WIndows Xp when using scancat and is that still available? The AOR SearchLight comes up the same as it did on Windows 3.1 years ago.

AOR 3000A conrtol software ****AVAILABLE****

There is a company web site called - COMPUTER INTERNATIONAL LLC CICS CCR BONITO RadioCom WAVECOM W-CODE W61PC W61LAN-MK2 W61BV W61SAT W61CL W51PC W51LAN Wavecom W51CL Government Applications military decoder BOGER 35S 35DRX-3000 DRM Bonito BoardTerminal HF decoder encoder Radios used - on the web that sells RX only software and TX/RX software for the AOR 3000A. The RX only version does lots of stuff, is full screen, decodes many amateur digital modes incl cw, rtty, etc. With this version you control only 1 radio. With the Tx/Rx version you can control 2 radios at one time. The number of freq's you can store is unlimited but they are only stored within the software program. There are screen captures of what this software does and its will only work on machines XP or higher. The phone number for Computer Int is 989-224-9080 and you will talk to a very nice gentlemen with a German accent that is a ham operator. The web site for the main company in Germany is Bonito. Cost of the software is $149 for the Rx only and $199 for the Tx/Rx version and covers many radios. There is a listing on the web page.

laptop com-port

Have you used the comm port with anything else lately? Are you certain the port is functioning OK? If not sure you might check whether it has been disabled; when first booting you have about 4 seconds to hit a certain key (usually there's a line display at the bottom of the boot screen listing which key) to go into bios setup and modify hardware settings on the machine. Often there is an option to disable the comm port, particularly on laptops, because it uses a finite bit of battery life.

You can use an old fashioned phone modem to check the comm port (if you have one). I don't recall what program Windows uses for modem control... HyperTerminal??? Any modem control (terminal) program extant in the last 25 years should do the job. You're just looking to see if the modem receives your keystrokes - they will appear as a echo on the screen and also the modem light will often flash. You don't need the modem connected to the phone line, you're just using it to echo back the comm port signals.
