Good squelch setting for the DV1

Is there a happy medium to the squelch setting? I seem to be always making adjustments anywhere from 20 to 40. Any recommendations to any other setting that would help in both analog and digital modes?

Any good user guides?

The short answer to your question is "no" --- there are too many variables while tuning or scanning to offer a "one size fits all" squelch setting.

You might also want to refer to my "Niggle # 3" in this Icom thread, which addresses squelch settings on the R8600, and you may find that information applicable here as well:

have you check between Level Squelch and Noise Squelch?

And as the poster didn't suggest what frequencies he is listening to, the squelch setting can vary widely in a few KHz up or down the band(s) depending on local RF noise in your area. It would be amazing if a receiver had memorized squelch levels for memories but alas this is not the norm, and there is no way to search a range with one squelch setting as again, local noise seems like it will always ruin a good band scan like that.

Sorry, no is the answer I'm afraid. It's the nature of RF reception.

AR-DV1 has automatic squelch functions

I agree, particularly with your remark of this being the 'nature of RF reception'.

A receiver 'remembering' squelch settings would serve little purpose, as the settings are always subject to variation, even over the course of a few minutes.

Interestingly the AR-DV1 has two additional 'automatic' squelch options. LSQ(A) and NSQ(A), however my experience is they do not function with any degree of accuracy. Those two functions were abandoned in the DV10 I see, but there again so was frequency stability (sigh).

The only reliable squelch option in the DV1 is LSQ.

That’s a good question and I think it may have something to do with the fact that the DV-1 isn’t a trunk tracking scanner. I know, I know, it still doesn’t make sense to me either. Seems to me that, regardless of the radio’s capability, the RR data that’s going to be downloaded into the radio should be up to the user.
I use espyonard ( https://www.espyonard.com ) for memory management, virtual control and everything else I need.
