AOR DV1 has failed...

I have owned the DV1 for over three years, and it has been turned on 24/7 since then. Yesterday it started making a loud popping and growling type of noise. While I was trying to figure out the problem a "main board error" popped up and it locked up.It would not even shut off except by pulling the power cord. I am able to repeat this over and over.

It only seems to exhibit this behavior in approximately the 300-600mhz range, getting louder as I approach 450mhz, and then tapering off again. If I play too long within this range, the main board error pops up and I have to pull the plug again.

I can probably attach a sound file if I need to. Any thoughts?

Check the external power supplies voltage under load. You can probably measure it inside the receiver.
Check and reseat the cables on the main board. If there are any markings on the circuit board with voltages like 8,5V and so on you can check those as well. It can be the internal power supply that starts to fail, perhaps a capacitor or the switching oscillator.

I left it unplugged all night and tried again this morning - same results. So, I called AOR and they said to send an email describing the problem. I thought I would include an audio attachment so I powered up the receiver and Murphy jumped into the mix. Sure enough, the darn thing is working perfectly for the last 9 hours.

AOR did contact me fairly quickly and indicated that I might want to send it in for an inspection since it did display the main board error.

Woke up around 4am and found the loud popping and growling noise was back along with “NO res mainboard!” error. I guess I need to send it in.

You've probably already been through this but have you tried a System or Full reset before sending it away?

Tried both and same result. AOR said repairs could run $600 - $700 if it needs a main board!!! YIKES!!!

If you know your way around a multimeter I would seriously consider what Ubbe suggested. Just be careful not to short anything out whilst probing.
Could be something as simple as a cable making a poor contact.
Look for any signs of poor solder joints or anything that looks burnt or not quite right.
