It's probibly best to describe AORs as receivers that scan. They tend to be aimed more at the professional/govenment market than the Unidens and GREs. That is also the reason they are so expensive.

If anyone would like any information on AOR receivers let me know, I'm sure i could point you in the right direction. I own a few of their radios, researched them in detail and use them daily. Save your pennies, they don't come cheap, but once you get one you'll be hooked for life.

AOR 3000

I have an AOR 3000a that has been on for over 10 years and hasn't missed a beat, just keeps running. Too bad that it'll only scan 100 of it's 400 channels at a time, but it's a reciever and not a scanner. I use it mostly to monitor HF ssb sigs, but it scans VHF when I'm not using it. Darn thing was over $1000 back in the 80's but was/is worth it.

AOR 8000

I have an 8 year old 8k that I use most every day. I purchased it primarily because it could be unblocked for cellular scanning - not that I was listening to many cell calls. I just wanted to thumb my nose at the idiots in DC who passed that particular bit of legislative hooey. The 8k seems to be a very sensitive receiver; that along with the fact that I can hook it up to my computer for programming and control make it a great scanner.

I've got an AR8200 MK1 UK export Un-blocked and it rocks. Managing freqs is a breez with the PC software. Even found a peice of software that decodes pager data. I leave it hooked to the PC all day while I'm at work, recording local police. Then when I get home I can listen to hours of action in just a few minutes with none of the gaps between transmissions.

Hi rmosier,
If one were to surf the internet foe that software, what keywords would be best to use?

Hi I just bought a readio (bc246) from Universal Radio Inc. and in their catalog they sell this AOR radio surveillance system which is a combination of an AOR5000A with a spectrum analizer that can also be a vector analyzer for use in monitoring digital comunications. Data packets in PDC, PHS and GSM formats that can be displayed and identifyied in binary and its also possible to see hex information. This unit is no joke is costs 6899.95 is this actually capable of monitoring digital communiations?

I have a question. I'm looking for a good wideband receiver that will also perform well on HF. Will the AOR AR8200 Mark IIIB portable reciver perform well on HF or should I just spend the money on a good HF tabletop receiver?

Racin, i own the 8200 as well, it is not a strong preformer on HF bands, but no handheld is. If HF is your passion then I would get an HF receiver such as the ICOM R75 "good price", or if you are looking for a wideband, the ICOM R8500 for the price, and the AOR AR5000 if money means nothing. I own the AOR AR5000A+3U and am very happy with it!

Auren, No that setup can not monitor digital communications, my best understanding of it is that it can monitor the data, as many setups can, and also piece together some of the packets to get an idea of what is going on, but it cannot demodulate digital audio. You can piece together a more advanced setup with AOR products then that, and at a better price. That is more geared towards government agencies and the like, hence the huge price. Check out AOR's new sr2000 which is soon to be released, it is a really neat toy I may invest in as an add on to my 5000A.

I own several AR-8200’s. MK1, 2, & 3. I bought my first one about 15 years ago. At the end of the day, they are overpriced, full of glitches, battery hogs, difficult to program on the fly, poor on HF & out dated!

That being said they do many things great! If you are looking for a “scanner” to listen to the local PD buy a BCD-396T or PSR-500. Both on eBay can be had for 400ish bucks. Even a Pro-96 or Pro-97 will work well. If you are looking to get into some of the more hard core listening a “receiver” like the AR-8200MKIII or IC-R20 is your ticket.

I agree And disagree...
I own the AOR 8200MK3 and using a performanceHF
And Various othe SW type antenna have picked up a LOT.....
Battery hogs
the ONLY radio that I can vouch for being good with batteries is the Pro97.
But hey more features equal more power usage PERIOD LOL
Though yes Table tops are better for they are constantly on AC power for one thing.
Though I use the MK3 with the ac cord
And charge the batteries externally
SO ANyways
LOL
YEah AOR is among the best.
And its nice to pick up SW Etc on the "fly"
ANd besides, the AOR give you a more of a pro look rather than the whacker look with a radioshack or GRE even:roll:

Yes this receiever can decode digital packets but as far as I know you need Gov clearance to have one. I have Gov clearance but I can't even get one of these so not sure what other clearance level or branch of the goverment you have to work for to get one. My guess FCC directly,NSA,CIA,DEA,FBI.

AOR specifically makes a node (For lack of a better word) that will decode P25 modulation from their receivers. However, this is not capable of trunk tracking. No "government security clearance" required.

Unless you want to get into Iden, GSM or CDMA stuff..

You forgot one very important three letter acronym! FCC

AR5000A+3
The AR5000A+3 provides amazing sensitivity and strong signal handing across an unprecedented wide frequency coverage with all mode receive tunable down to 1Hz steps... all this in a compact cabinet weighing just 7.8 lbs. No wonder this receiver has been adopted as the definitive receiver for professional operators, top-end hobbyists, government departments and armed forces throughout the world. The short wave performance is so good that separate receivers need not be considered.
