• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

You learned a $1500 lesson.
Ebay is full of counterfeit and grey market products.

I would say 98 percent of the APX radios on Ebay are either development radios like you got, parts built, or ALT (accelerated life testing) units.

How do you buy a legit APX? Only way FOR SURE is from an authorized Motorola dealer.

Take your chances, spin the dice, Ebay is a trip to Vegas. Never gamble anything more than you can afford to lose.

There's a seller on Ebay offering a flash that he says will fix the problem you are describing with the developmental firmware / CPS issue.

Cost is $149.00

eBay item number: 151409571093

you might as well burn that $149 and throw your radio in the fire because you will get more than that from that auction.

Or kick yourself in the balls and take that $149 down to the pub and get drunk.

That fix ain't working... that radio ain't working. It's over, Johnny... it's over!

It's not just software. The radio may contain hardware or chips that never made it to the final production radios.

I suspect trying to get one over on the depot is going to be futile.

I seem to recall a thread where someone got an APX Alpha with an XTS5000 codeplug/firmware.

It should be worth noting that not every radio on ebay is junk. I bought my APX-7000 for around $3G and it works perfectly. I had an issue initially with the feature set, but with a little help from a fellow RR member I was able to overcome the problem. It wasn't a flaw with the radio, for the record. I also know someone else who purchased an APX-7000 on ebay and is VERY happy with his as well. The trick is to look carefully and learn how to spot red flags. The bad ones are out there, but if you are smart and careful you CAN score one that will work well for you. I've purchased several XTS portables and XTL mobiles from ebay also, and only 1 radio had an issue, but the guy was able to repair it.

+1 for this. I obtained a crap ton of Jedi and Astro radios with no problems. Hell, I even got "parts only" XTS3000's that worked perfectly including AES-256 boards from one seller.
