• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a APX 8500, being used in a trunking system that goes into "Fail 001" when on a specific site.

The radio will transmit for a second, two at the most, enough for a word or two and the unit ID to be seen and heard by others but then goes to "fail 001".

This is isolated to being on the one site on the system, change sites and its not an issue.

Any ideas?

Has the radio been put through a service monitor recently?

Fail 001 is the VCO being out of lock. The radio is not happy with a specific frequency used at that site.

Have the radio properly tuned.

You sure the band plan is correct?

Assuming you're referring to the Montana statewide system, which is primarily VHF with a few 700/800 sites in the mix...which specific site is giving you trouble? Is the radio working fine on VHF sites but having issues with 700/800, or vice versa? Details are important, but at the end of the day RadioReference is primarily a hobbyist website, not the best place to seek help with a legitimate subscriber on a statewide public safety system. You need to get professionals involved here...local/state radio shop, system admins, MSI, etc.

THIS! Make sure the bandplan is correct. I fat fingered a VHF entry one time on a statewide system and as soon as it went to a specific tower that used that bandplan, it would FAIL 001 on voice calls. I caught the error and all was well. I did some quick math and my typo was trying to make the radio go in to the 230 MHz range when it tried to calculate the voice channel based off of the incorrect band plan setting I entered.
