• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Yes, correct....I did confuse myself there. I try very hard to carry the batteries on the right, what works on both series of radios, for this very reason. Thank you for pointing this out so others do not make the same mistake.

Be VERY careful with using batteries with both sets of contacts on an APX. I have seen the second set rip out the battery contacts off of the board numerous times. Most often is the center battery sense pin but I have seen the ground and B+ pins ripped off too. They will still be present in the radio, but the contact to the board will be damaged and most of the time traces ripped off the board. We discovered this when several users complained that they lost their battery meter even after they did a recondition cycle. The contacts looked like they had been moved physically and when we opened up the radio, the pins were no longer making contact with the board. There was really no way to resolder them so they would be physically attached and strong. The user decided to save money and bought XPR batteries. After they got sent to the depot and the new "discount" rates, they decided it was cheaper to buy the correct battery.

We have seen this on both the APX1000 and APX4000 platforms on multiple users.

EDIT: This was with legit OEM Motorola batteries, not Amazon specials.

I'm having a hard time seeing how a part number makes that much of a difference. Seems like it's more of a user error than a wrong part error. Those pins dont see much wear from just taking batteries on and off.

We noticed that the brass battery connections were getting hung up on the lip of the recessed set of top pins during battery removal/insertion. The APX batteries do not have this and are smooth plastic.

Good to note Echo4Thirty, as I have been buying more with both contacts to try to minimize confusion. On another note, I had a site buy these from a local vendor and wonder why they did not all take a charge. I asked if they all had the same serial number, and lo and behold, these twelve batteries have the same serial number. (Trbo series knock offs), but we will be getting money back on this and some people that went against my recommendations will be trained in new procedures and procurement policy.

I was told that the picture was not clear enough to make out the serial number on these batteries. The batteries were purchased through Grainger, and the serial number is: 500000AE928E on all of them purchased in a batch. Buyer beware, and I would recommend inspecting batteries as soon as they are received.

Oh yea that battery, the font looks whacky and lacking a bit. The legit moto battery labels I've had never had that much empty white space and had more text crap and not having moto label seems fishy. That serial number seems popular for fakes. they probably also have a blank spot circle on the back and no impres in the plastic below that?

Yes, these are fakes. To chrismol1, they do not even have a circle in the plastic on the back. I do not have them now, as these were sent back to Grainger, so I can't get any more pictures. But definitely not Motorola manufacture.

Another example of why you buy through Motorola direct or a trusted reseller, and internal to my employer, the Radio Services department is supposed to purchase all related hardware. This was a business element that thought they could save money.
