• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Are the FRS only 1-14 channels dead in your area?

Quite a few farmers use FRS radios around me. I mostly hear them at planting and harvest seasons. I also hear more traffic during firearm deer season in my area. The farmers like to use channels 15 -17 and you never know what channels the hunters will be on. I do occasionally hear a few kids now and then.
Hunting season is when the bands comes alive around here. FRS, GMRS, and of course...marine band mobiles, chasing their dogs and is quite entertaining

I live full time off the lake. During the tourist season when the "part timers" come down for their summer vacations, I have to block out the FRS/GMRS frequencies with my scanner. It's loaded with the kids, boaters, and hikers...all those beeps, and tones. MURS is fairly quiet, with a one or two yells on ch 2 (walmart 20 miles away). The wife and I use channel 5. One of these days I'm going to find those frequencies filled here too...lol

Interesting seeing all the comments on activity around the country.

Pretty much a no-man's land at my QTH . Hunters whispering on occasion during the season. That's using my scanner though. I'll connect my SDR to the 2m/440 antenna on the roof and see what's up. It's a few days after Christmas so maybe folks are trying out their new toys hihi.

Might be too far away, but a few years ago some of the truckers was using the grms frequencies over in Perth Amboy area.
I've done some ground stomping around that area a lifetime ago...but about 8, or 9 years ago I was out there briefly doing work for Verizon. Stayed in Sayerville for two days, wasn't able to go reminiscing tho...😑

Started hearing a Newly opened CBD Dispensary in my area this morning on Frs ch.7... " Scott with an online order for pre-rolled, gummies, etc" :D
I noticed alot of places are using the retevis RT 22 its cheap and good and most users never reprogram so I keep 1 scanning while i run around. in New Buffalo MI you have 6 or so dispensary's (so far) within 0 .5 watt range of each other so they are quite busy

Oh yeah, I forgot! Tony's Restraint in Ivy Land Bucks County uses FRS/GMRS I know that I should be in range to hear some traffic, but I don't. Of course, I'm not really too sure about the radios that Tony's staff are using, I assume they're FRS / GMRS but looks can be deceiving. For all I know, Tony's staff could be using the color star frequencies.

No one cares about this story, but who cares...

A bunch of kids in my neighborhood have FRS radios (or maybe just one of them has a lot of them?). They have an imaginary store that they run and use the radios for it. One day they called security because a lady was in the store and was having a "bad hair day" and they wanted her out. Another day someone robbed them and they gave out a pretty detailed description of the person and vehicle, even using common phonetics for the license plate. They do price checks, catch shoplifters and a lot of other normal store radio activities. Sounds like they are having fun and staying out of trouble.

Listened a while to the 462 and 467 MHz portions of the band yesterday afternoon, nothing heard on 467 and a few distant repeater CW IDs in the 462 MHz portion.

Here Ch 7 is used by a lumber yard and Ch 8 is used by a grocery store. Ch 14 had a guy and his wife on it at some point but it has been a couple years since I've heard them. During the summer I will hear tourists or kids playing with the call button on channels 1-4. Otherwise complete silence.

At my location it is mostly dead, but that's no surprise since FRS is very short range. I will occasionally hear kids and workers but otherwise nothing. I scan MURS & FRS/GMRS frequencies continually. There is some GMRS activity on a local repeater.

christmas and hanukkah brought some new households on the air near my place in iowa city.

when i'm at my place in philly i don't bother listening for FRS specifically but do hear FRS radios occasionally because i use GMRS and often have at least one HT parked on my household channel and scanning the b-side, i never heard much FRS or GMRS near Chestnut Hill when we lived that way but in Elkins Park i'll hear some but i wouldn't recognize if they're a regular or not. all children sound the same except my own apparently!

I get everything from School campus use, Flaggers, heard a Harbor Freight tools once, Plumbers, bounty hunters once, folks where I am don't want to pay an FCC license to talk on free airwaves and want instant communication.
