I just ordered a Pro 96 with the Thanksgiving Day special, but now that I am doing a little research it doesn't seem like there are any digital systems in operation in NJ.

Is it a waste of money to have purchased the Pro 96, when a much less expensive trunking scanner without digital capability would work?

Thanks in advance.

Let's see.....

Morris County, NJ is mixed mode.
Burlington COunty, NJ is digital
NJSP Troop B is mixed mode (but not currently using any digital).
Montclair, NJ to be digital soon.
Edison, NJ mixed mode (but digital is secure)
East Orange, NJ is mixed mode (but digital is secure)

I'm sure there is more in southern NJ.

I'd say it's always good to be prepared for the future. I mean you could have bought the less expensive non-digital and then bam 6 months from now your local listening area switches do digital.

It was a wise purchase.

Thank you all for your comments. Troop B is about the only thing that is near me, and since they aren't using digital now, I'm not sure if I should just return the scanner or keep it. I have a couple of other portable scanners already, but none do trunking.

The only reason I would return it is that a future model might include more features, and since I really don't have a need for digital now, it might be smarter to wait until I really do need digital scanning.

I'll see how I feel when it comes in the mail, and make a decision at that time.

Thanks again to all of you for your comments.

Dover Twp PD, Ocean County, near Toms River is digital. The NJSP are also in the process of converting their system to a Motorola SmartZone digital capable one. Troop B North is already tresting, and Troop C Central is scheduled to begin the changeover in January.
More agencies are sure to follow as the radio salesmen continue to push more new products that are "secure" and "scanner proof" in the interest of "homeland security".
So, my advice is to hang on to your digital capable scanner unless you want to have to upgrade in a couple years for some local system that will probably convert.

Hello,
If you load up a good bit of Fed stuff like USCS, ATF, USSS and DEA many of them operate in unencrypted digital.

And yes, Atlantic City (and some surrounding cities) is digital.
No other digital systems in NJ south of Burlington County to my knowledge.

They are the same agency. Toms River, aka Dover Twp.

Sparks, if you buy the programing cable ond get the Win96 software you can make it a lot easier to program and save yourself a whole lot of time. Also if you join the Yahoo "Pro-96 Group" you can find some file on the main page for NJ. So alls you have to do is down load the file and dump it into your scanner. This way you can listen to some stuff you want while you customize your own scanning list.

Edison TRS is mixed mode, as previously stated, however, only the PD digital TG's are ENC. The PD analog TG's are open (two of them) and Fire/EMS are in the open mode. This will clarify an earlier post. Also, Franklin Twp (Somerset County) is mixed mode, with most of the PD TG's digital ENC.

Atlantic Highlands PD is full time Astro (VSELP) non-APCO but is going to upgrade to APCO-25 in the near future.

Thanks for all the input. I have been watching the various Yahoo groups in anticipation of buying the PRO 96, and yes I will be buying the software as I understand it makes programming much easier.

Thanks again to all of you.

Dont forget everybody's family-oriented version of seaside... point pleasant beach pd has been digital for 3 or 4 years now. FD/EMS is analog.
