The only LEA's you will hear are the State Highway Patrol and other state agencies, maybe Black Mtn, UNC-A PD, and the Biltmore Estate PD. Everything else Law Enforcement in Buncombe County is encrypted full time now, including all APD. You can still hear Fire, and EMS dispatch at least. EMS to ER comms on the TRS are E. You can monitor most of the surrounding areas, except Henderson County Law Enforcement which is also now encrypted from what I gather. On the Federal side, GSMNP is mostly in the clear but some rangers are E, same for BRP Rangers. Otherwise, enjoy the lovely mountains, and jolly ole Asheville if you can afford it. I lived there a few years, back before everyone with a badge went super secret squirrel due to an incident with APD being streamed..

Hi! I'm from Asheville myself, and an new to scanners. My SDS100 should be here on Saturday! I'm going to do the zip code entry thing and see what I can pick up from there. Any interesting frequencies to look for around here?

Check the RadioReference database for Asheville agencies/frequencies. Asheville city has a trunked radio system (PD is enc, but fire is not), Buncombe County also has a trunked system (sheriff is enc, but fire and EMS are not), Asheville airport ops and security are on NXDN, BRP is a mix, SHP is on Viper, plus lots of other miscellaneous stuff to hear.

Doing the zip code thing is kind of a shotgun approach. You'll ultimately be happier creating some Favorite Lists. You'll have much more control and won't be hitting "AVOID" constantly.
I figured I'd do that after I got my feet wet with this new, (my first), scanner. :)

Today I was at the Biltmore House and observed everyone on property had small Motorola radios which looked like the WAVE LTE radio. Can anyone confirm they are now using LTE communications?

Doubtful. They were using DMR & I recently programmed a handful of Kenwood NX-3720s for their company police department.

100% saw the employees using Motorola radios, maybe they were the vhf or uhf version, makes sense. Not the police units, all other departments. Thanks for the quick reply 2154.

Oh not arguing that point. That was directed at them using LTE now. My bad should’ve specified on that. Moto & Kenwood (as others) both make the DMR offering which are at the base, completely interchangeable and they had started switching to some of the NX-3000 stuff.
