My workhorse BC125AT has suddenly lost its voice THRU THE BUILT-IN SPEAKER. Reception is fine. and the audio works just fine when an external speaker is plugged in, but no sound of any kind otherwise. Any clues? I can't find anything in its manual or online in the past, so would appreciate any suggestions. Problem is the same whether on batteries or plugged in. Thanks, folks!

Could be the speaker/headphones jack stuck in the external setting. Most of those speaker jacks have a little prong that gets pushed over, and disconnects the internal speaker and pipes audio out the plug.

Your problem is likely in the jack itself. It's designed so that the internal speaker is disabled when using an earphone or external speaker is plugged in. But occasionally, the piece that is supposed to reactivate the internal speaker when your earphone or external speaker is unplugged sticks. Sometimes, if you insert & remove the earpiece or speaker plug in the jack, several times in succession, you may be able to free it up so that it works correctly again.

in 2007 my new 396T acted the same way.
and there have been many posts on here about it.
i thought my handheld would make a fine base until i pulled the plug out and the speaker worked.
it has happened many, many times since then.
enjoy it.
and it has happened to my 396XT a few times.

Now that it is working. get some contact cleaner, spray it in the jack and plug and unplug your speaker a few times to clean the contacts.

Yep. Remembered I have a can of WD-40 "Specialist Electronics and Electrical Parts Cleaner" and that cleaned it up even better. Audio is now even sharper and the rig didn't get soaked. I've been away from RadioReference way too long.

I agree and it's very common problem.
