I had one of those about 20 years ago. They work good but they don't last very long if you bend them a lot.
Just above the base is a rubber "spring" with a short piece of coax inside that connects the base to the lower sleeve section of the antenna (the thick part).
Repeated flexing of the antenna will break the coax and there is no way to repair it.
I also had the soft flex top version and I thought the top section was way to floppy to use on a moving vehicle.
