• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi everyone,
Im a GMRS LICENSE OPERATOR and I’m trying to figure out BAOFENG RADIOS TO HAVE FAMILY OUTTINGS !!
I have {9} radios and I’m using the chirp app to program all the radios the same way .
It shows everything that ( I think that ) is the right information and I set all them to tune the same !!!
Everything shows that it was uploaded the same on all the radios , but when we go outside to check the radios against one another, I’m not getting anything _{ no connections on any of the radios???
I have reproed everything several times , still the same no response from any of the radios .
i have installed some repeaters in several different areas -{ traveling , family trips , hunting ,ect}
im in Texas -( around the Pearland area , but we travel to our hunting property out in the { del Rio / Dryden area} and we go mainly I10 till San Antonio and switch over to highway 90 west from there till Dryden .
Im about ready to throw them all in the trash !!!
cCan someone stead me in the right direction to get them programmed right and be able to communicate with each one of them ???
I would appreciate it very much & would be a happy radio operator!!!
Thanks,
Gary Maynor

What model radio are you using?

I agree that it sounds like these radios are not cleared by the FCC for transmitting on anything other than specific Ham bands, usually 2m and 70cm. That doesn’t mean it can’t be done, however you likely purchased the radios type cleared for Ham as opposed to GMRS being that Baofeng keeps them separated by model. Some of these radios could be “unlocked,” but you’d be doing so at your own risk. I’m not saying you’ll break the radios or anything, far from it, but GMRS has specific antenna and wattage rules all its own and if you don’t program them to be exactly compliant, someone could technically report you to the FCC.

Another thing you need to be careful about is using CHIRP to intentionally lockout Tx on certain frequencies. I’ll give you an example, I have a few Baofeng GT-3WP radios that I setup exclusively as SHTF radios. So, once fully unlocked, I could theoretically Tx on many VHF (and UHF) channels. I was monitoring some analog public service frequencies, so I absolutely didn’t want to Tx on those, therefore I made them Rx only. In addition to the analog emergency frequencies for the county, I added FRS, GMRS, MURS, every NOAA Wx band, PMR, various local repeaters, and more. The point was that I had to be super careful to program exactly what I wanted so I couldn’t accidentally hit a button and Tx by mistake! And, yes, all that on a Baofeng GT-3WP!

You may also want to checkout the UV-K5 radios as they’re a dream to swap firmware on and completely customize. They’re dirt cheap and way better than comparable Baofeng radios. I found a couple very minor technical issues that will likely never affect the average user, e.g. FM radio harmonics being picked up on the far low end of VHF, but that’s with the stock antenna and IFX tweaks may resolve it, although I haven’t tried. They‘re a great radio for all they can do!

Please let me know which radio your working with and I’ll see if I have any ideas for you.

I have a UV-5R, older original, that covers GMRS. I set it up with a low FRS channel and best is talking to my brother across a Walmart parking lot.
I also have a UV-K5(8) opened up with IJV firmware. This gets near double the range (2 miles ?) on FRS.
I set it up with a couple MIL-AIR channels and very good at 2 miles or better.
