To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey Everyone - I have a Baofeng 5RX.
First thing - did I misread the description? This is a tri-band handheld, correct? I can receive aircraft (AM) frequencies, correct?
If not, tell me now and I will hang my head in shame and go shopping again. Lucky they're cheap. Not like when I was a kid. A rig like this was science fiction and would cost you $10k (exaggeration I know)

So, if I am correct and it is a tri-band, I am attempting to program it with CHIRP. I was able to get the software to connect/recognize my radio. That's not a problem.
However, when I attempt to load the frequencies, including the AM ones, I see an error. (see screen shot below)

Anyone ever see this before? If it's a tri-band radio, what the Hell am I doing wrong? I'm not even sure where to start with this
Thanks in advance everyone.

Glen

Tri band, when referring to that type of radio, usually means 144/220/440 MHz amateur bands and has nothing to do with AM aircraft band.

If CHIRP says "Mode AM not supported" then the radio isn't capable of AM.

Okay - so help me understand, here.
This radio, says in the description that it is capable of aircraft band RX.
A Baofeng UV-5RX.
First question - did I misread the description? Is it not capable of receiving ATAC frequencies?
I think that is the first question that I should be asking.

Try entering an aircraft band frequency manually to see if that works. If it does, then try to download it with CHIRP.

I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that you won't be able to program in the air band frequencies on CHIRP, but you can manually input them in VFO mode on the radio. They are also correct, that tri band is 70cm, 2m, and 1.25m I believe. I've never used the 1.25m bands, I usually stay in 2m/70cm.

On the Amazon ad, it plainly states "AM/FM Air band receiving". So, either that's bogus or something isn't right between the radio and chirp. I don't have one and don't know anyone that does to ask if it actually does receive AM on the Air band there.

Thank you - a sensible and intelligent answer. Much appreciated!
