• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Got a friend who bought two GT-3's after he saw mine. He has windows 7, same as I do. He can not get Chirp to recognized what com port the cable is using. We go to Control panel, devise manager and check what com port the cable is using. Then we go to chirp and assign that com port. Then we want to download up upload radio file changes and the com port is not available or is not recognized.. Go back to control panel, nothing has changed. Stumperd. The Baofeng software cause the computer screen to wiggle and bounce around badly. Same software I got through the GT-3 package. My computer is alittle older than the other person who is having difficulties but we are both running windows 7. Believe his is home professional while I have home basic.

Don't bother with Prolific-chip programming cables (<$10) or the Baofeng software. Use CHIRP and a cable with a FTDI chip. Much more reliable, much less hassle.

Did you verify that both are running the same version driver for the cable? His could have auto-updated to a non-working driver.

Finaslly solved the problem. First had to go in Control panel, then go to devices and printers then click on each device until you find a device that gives you an option to device installation settings. Right click on each, when you find device installatrion settings, change to never install driver software. Then install the prolific driver 3.2 from Miklor. The cable to the radio is unplugged from the computer while this is going on.When completed, plug cable into usb port , windows will say its detected new usb port, then into the radio. The driver will not get over written by Windows, this is not the same as block software updates. Once this was done, the cable was recognized and a comport was established. Then make sure you plug into the same usb port everytime else you are looking to set a comport again. While the Baofeng radios work good, the software hookup was much harder than the Yaesu or Kenwoods I have done in the past. Computer expertise was much higher and frustrating but when its done, it smooth sailing. I wish there was a way to sort the frequencies. I've tried to export a csv file, go to excell, sort a column, then reread the file with Chirp but you can not program with a csv file. So its a manual operation to rewrite the radio file, in frequency order. This frequency order is nice when you are navigating to a new frequency you have programmed. You know which way to go, up or down, rather than playing spin the dial hoping to run into what you want.
