To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi,

I recently bought a Tosuny Walkie-Talkie Relay Box for my two Baofeng UV-5Rs. I was having a few issues. You see, whenever I plugin the repeater into the Baofeng, it will not receive any signals for a longer range. When I take the repeater out, the Baofeng will receive signals from that exact longer range (I tested this with my friend). I then tested this with a homemade repeater system using headphone jacks and cords, and well, the same issue occurred. Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this?

How far apart are the radios?
What kind of antennas are you using?
What kind of duplexer are you using?
What transmit and receive frequencies are you using?

Is it this?
Products like that are junk.
Only suckers who no nothing about radio buy stuff like that and expect it to work like a real repeater.

Ya unless your using that parrot box in a VHF / UHF split situation...what happens is one radio end's up desensitizing the other radio. For sheets and giggles I tried setting one of these up and literally couldn't get it operate even with a 50mhz band split on UHF. On a VHF/UHF split it was possible but the delay in any decent length of a QSO is just garbage - good thing it was Amazon and away it went right back.

If you describe what your actually trying to achieve, the group here can probably steer you in the right direction and wether or not your a licensed amatuer/GMRS or plan to use it illegally on say MURS .....O IC you have a GMRS License...ya that's not going to work very well ~ you need a cheap chicom UHF duplexer with a 5mhz split.

Sorry, I am still getting new to radio. Are there any less expensive repeaters you would recommend?

The Baofeng radios have crappy receivers that are barely suitable for stand alone reception and totally unsuitable for using as a duplex repeater as you attempted. I would suggest a simplex repeater like a "parrot" box. The only one I can recommend is the Argent Data ADS-SR1 $89.00. Though there may be cheaper, the ADS-SR1 is well designed.

And I don't know your exact location in NY where you would plan to do this, but make sure you scan/listen to the GMRS repeater pairs around you and pick a clear one, or one that your low power box won't interfere with another.

He is in NYC. Those notch duplexers "might" work, but the BaoFeng receivers are still going to have to deal with all the various transmitters on the air.

What do mean "might" ...my neighbor in true norcal has one set up on GMRS for many years now it covers his 3 fields, is done with Boafengs and works like a charm.

The OP is a newbie. If he spends money on a duplexer, assuming it is tuned correctly, does he have the correct cabling? (add $50) Then does he have a correct base station antenna? (Add $150) Can he measure desense? (probably nope) Then there are all the other TX's out there. NYC has a ton of transmitters that a Baofeng must deal with.

Then his follow up: "Sorry, I am still getting new to radio. Are there any less expensive repeaters you would recommend? " Therefore if he is looking for cheap way for a Baofeng with its factory antenna to act like a repeater, yes use a simplex "parrot".
