If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Baofeng Baofeng UV-5R - transmits loud burst of noise at end of Tx on bubble-pack radios

Hi folks - fairly new to the GMRS/Amateur space so I appreciate any patience you can muster.

I have the ~ubiquitous~ Baofeng UV-5R radio, and a pair of Motorola Talkabout T803s for home use. I've noticed when I broadcast from the Baofeng, there is a large burst of noise (what I would characterize as "static") at the end of the transmission, only audible on the T803. I do not hear this burst of "static" from the Baofeng itself.

When transmitting from the T803s to the UV-5R, I only hear the usual bubblepack roger beep on the Baofeng's end.

I've toggled Squelch Tail Elimination (HT to HT) and Squelch Tail Eliminate (Repeater) , and turned STE Repeater Delay to OFF on the Baofeng via CHIRP. No change (and my understanding of how STE works is that one wouldn't expect this to change the noise at the end on another radio anyway).

I haven't had another bubblepack radio model to test this on - I've got a Midland transceiver around here somewhere but haven't been able to confirm this isn't exclusively a Motorola problem (though I would assume it isn't.)

Video below for sound reference.

Edit: attaching the radio's IMG from CHIRP as well for reference.

I don’t have a baofeng but it seems like that “squelch tail eliminate” feature is what is otherwise known as (in my experience) reverse-burst. It is designed to stop the PL tone, causing the receiving radio to close squelch earlier and eliminate the tail. But it only works if you are using PL tones.

I’m also not familiar with that Motorola HT you have there but on my tiny phone screen it appears to be on channel 17 with a tone of “0” aka no tone. If that’s the case, add a PL tone to both radios and it might solve your issue.

Check the roger tone selection on the uv5r; it may have MDC1200 enabled or just the ANI set for end of transmission.

Baofeng (and some Wouxun) models don't have the same CTCSS Squelch Tail Elimination that Motorola, Kenwood and other real radios use. They do use the same DCS turnoff code (134.4 Hz) because it's part of a standard.

Motorola and others shift the phase of the CTCSS tone by 120, 180 or 240 degrees for about 200 mS before the carrier drops. Motorola calls it reverse-burst.
Baofeng and some other CCRs change the CTCSS tone to 55.2 Hz for about 275 mS before the carrier drops.
There is nothing you can do about the squelch tail noise when using Baofengs with Motorola or others.
Baofeng doesn't have reverse-burst.
Other radios don't have Chinese STE.

All you can do is use DCS and enable STE in the baofengs. That's not possible if you are using your Baofeng on somebody else's system and have to use their tones.

They have a noise-maker that imitates the sound. It's what many here refer to as the trademarked "CopSound".

May be a dumb notion but did you write you configuration to the radio?
Through repeaters, you are using CTCSS/DCS andat transmission end the tones/codes are reversed like 500 Ms
Gives the RX time to squelch. Similar with radio to radio.
If it just doesn't work, you may have a buggy firmware.

… yep, the “frog sound” as they call it on some models.

But the OP has a classic old UV-5R, and these basic Baofeng don’t have “noise makers” that imitates “cops radio sound”.
