For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I recently ordered a local volunteer fire department 5 baofengs programed no problem with chirp then ordered 15 more.
Programed all of them with image from first five. OOPS really OOPS everything looked ok but now no recieve on any of them.
TX and and all other functions OK, just no receive unless you press the mon key.

Tried recovery page my image is not there, in fact I goggled for 6 hrs nothing on my image they are new I guess.
any suggestions?

Upload finished, but the 'Other Settings' could not be sent because the firmware version of the image (BFS311 BFB297 ) does not match that of the radio (N5R-20 BFB297 ).

You create your own image when you download from the radio to CHIRP. There are limits to the compatibility of images between radios with different firmware versions or model numbers. So you have to start from a fresh download from radio with newer firmware version.

In CHIRP, export your existing channel settings to a CSV file.

Reset a "problem" radio to factory default using menu 40 option. Download settings from the "problem" radio into CHIRP. This creates a new image file compatible with new firmware version.

Import your CSV file with channel settings into new image file.

Verify that the miscellaneous radio settings are what you want under the settings tab. You might want to change the startup message from default to firmware version so you know which radios have which firmware.

Upload new image with imported channel settings to radio.

Save image file with a different file name, preferably including the firmware version in filename.

Enjoy your new radios.

As far as firmware goes I get BFB297 which, from what I've read, means you need to get the firmware version from within chirp. Interesting that the chirp I have doesn't list the firmware field. So, I'm not sure how to get the version. Anyone know how?
You must be running a very old version of CHIRP. The ability to show the firmware version on the Settings->Other Settings menu panel was added in May of 2013. CHIRP V0.4.0 stable or any 2014 daily build will have this feature.

Mine was doing the same thing after using chirp to do some changes. Last night after tinkering with it off and on for about 1 month(my mobile unit is being repaired) i figured it out. it was definately in the firmware could not access any settings through chirp. the firmware being displayed on radio was 297 but chirp said 297 didnt match the radio once i used the one chirp said it wanted for factory software(which was 311) wala everything is back to hunky dory. So yes in fact the problem is in chirp software which changed firmware to begin with. Bcause CHIRP WAS THE ONLY SOFTWARE I USED ON THE UNIT. Read through here and figured it out. UV5R Software Recovery UV-5R good luck

I doubt that CHIRP caused this. But in any case, the first thing that everyone using CHIRP should do is to download from their "working" radio. Without making any changes, save this off as your "reset" image file. Store it in a safe place so that you do not lose it. Don't ever change it. Then no matter what happens, uploading this file back to your radio will put it exactly back to the state it was in when you originally downloaded from it.

Having the original image would make this much easier to "fix". But it still might be possible to do it without the original image. I have already replied to your direct email to me. I am looking forward to helping you recover from this. I am pretty confident that we can do it.

I have the same exact problem with a BF-F8+ as described right now. Is there a fix to this?

I am experiencing the same issue. Ordered a uv-5r with N5R-20 BFB297 and I can only listen when holding the monitor key. Any help would be greatly appreciated, these little radios are a blast when they actually work

Did you receive it this way or did this happen after you received it? How did you program this radio?

I'd also add to also be certain you are running the most recent stable release of CHIRP,
to be sure that batteries are fully charged on the HT and that the programming
cable is fully inserted into the jacks..

Radio was received with this issue, then programmed hoping that would solve it. No change, function 40 reset and still no change. If there isn't a fix available I'll return them to Amazon but unfortunately that only means someone else that buys it will wind up here like me.

If this is due to the factory putting a memory load from a traditional UV-5R or variant radio into your radio, then the only way to "fix" it is to get a programming cable and CHIRP and use them to upload a CHIRP .img file that was saved from a working radio.

I received such an image (.img) file yesterday morning and I am making it available here for anyone to use to get their radio with N5R-20/BFB297 firmware working properly.

I am now hearing that this may occur when menu 8 (BEEP) is set to OFF. Did you set it of OFF (the default after a reset is usually ON). Try setting this menu to ON and see if there is a difference.

This was posted in the baofeng_uv5r Yahoo group:

Baofeng UV5R firmware bug notice

Radios affected:All UV5R series radios with new N5R-20 and N5R-30 firmware.
This includes UV5RA, RB, RC, etc as well as GT-3, BFF8, F8HP, etc

Radios Not affected:
This does not affect the UV82 series

What occurs:
If MENU 8 (Beep) is set to OFF, the receiver is muted.
Setting MENU 8 back to on un-mutes the receiver.

This does not affect any other function of the radio. Only the Keypad Beep

Baofeng was made aware of the error and will have it corrected in the next firmware release.

BAOFENG UV-5R Software for Windows 7 and 8

I notice the software available goes "Shaky" on Windows 7 and 8.
its unusable.

Would anyone have got CHIRP to work?
The Baofeng software appears to have serious problems with Windows 7
and I'd like to know if anyone has CHIRP working reading and writing to the UV-5R
in Windows 7?

I also notice the Roger Beep has to be on to receive and or scan or even
listen to any frequency other than the channel when powered up.
Turn the Roger Beep off and it will only receive when you turn the radio on.

Any advice appreciated.

Having no problems at all with Chirp on Windows 7, 64 bit on a BFS-313 firmware UV-5R.

Also the issue with the Roger beep isn't happening for me. Turned it off long ago and it scans and locks on transmissions just fine.

Are you talking about flashing? The flashing occurs when the OEM software is trying to find a COM port. If you don't have the USB programming plugged in, the computer will appear locked up while it flashes. Just wait it out.

I've been programming my UV-5R with my Win 7 64-bit computer and CHIRP for over 2 years.

This is a bug in the N5R-20 (& N5R-30) firmware. And to be clear, it is menu 8 (BEEP) which provides feedback when you press a key on the keypad, not the "Roger Beep".

UV5R

Talk about challenging.
I finally got the CHIRP to work, and it works well enough, COM PORT CAN AND DOES CHANGE OFTEN.
YOu need to click on Devices and Printers in Windows 7 to see what is going on, and the Bofong Software that does not work, causes conflicts. I had to uninstall that softwaree and drivers to get
CHIRP to work and you MUST allow the computer time to register a com port for the cable, THEN
try it out.

I'm now using the BF 480 and CHIRP for the 777, 888 and the UV5R.

Now, how can you get the UV5R to use BOTH lines of the display for the ONE CHANNEL.

I really don't know why they place two frequencies on the display. A and B..
apart from having two VFO's it would be easier to just have a good display of information.

I notice it gets lots of commercial interference but that aside, its got a sensative receiver.
Not great for distant amateur repeaters but, what do you expect for a small handheld.
At least you can hear them.
