You must be running a very old version of CHIRP. The ability to show the firmware version on the Settings->Other Settings menu panel was added in May of 2013. CHIRP V0.4.0 stable or any 2014 daily build will have this feature. As far as firmware goes I get BFB297 which, from what I've read, means you need to get the firmware version from within chirp. Interesting that the chirp I have doesn't list the firmware field. So, I'm not sure how to get the version. Anyone know how?
Mine was doing the same thing after using chirp to do some changes. Last night after tinkering with it off and on for about 1 month(my mobile unit is being repaired) i figured it out. it was definately in the firmware could not access any settings through chirp. the firmware being displayed on radio was 297 but chirp said 297 didnt match the radio once i used the one chirp said it wanted for factory software(which was 311) wala everything is back to hunky dory. So yes in fact the problem is in chirp software which changed firmware to begin with. Bcause CHIRP WAS THE ONLY SOFTWARE I USED ON THE UNIT. Read through here and figured it out. I recently ordered a local volunteer fire department 5 baofengs programed no problem with chirp then ordered 15 more.
Programed all of them with image from first five. OOPS really OOPS everything looked ok but now no recieve on any of them.
TX and and all other functions OK, just no receive unless you press the mon key.
Tried recovery page my image is not there, in fact I goggled for 6 hrs nothing on my image they are new I guess.
any suggestions?
Upload finished, but the 'Other Settings' could not be sent because the firmware version of the image (BFS311 BFB297 ) does not match that of the radio (N5R-20 BFB297 ).
so im assuming there is no fix if i dont have original image?
Having the original image would make this much easier to "fix". But it still might be possible to do it without the original image. I have already replied to your direct email to me. I am looking forward to helping you recover from this. I am pretty confident that we can do it.

I am experiencing the same issue. Ordered a uv-5r with N5R-20 BFB297 and I can only listen when holding the monitor key. Any help would be greatly appreciated, these little radios are a blast when they actually work
...in any case, the first thing that everyone using CHIRP should do is to download from their "working" radio.

Radio was received with this issue, then programmed hoping that would solve it. No change, function 40 reset and still no change. If there isn't a fix available I'll return them to Amazon but unfortunately that only means someone else that buys it will wind up here like me.

Are you talking about flashing? The flashing occurs when the OEM software is trying to find a COM port. If you don't have the USB programming plugged in, the computer will appear locked up while it flashes. Just wait it out.I notice the software available goes "Shaky" on Windows 7 and 8.
its unusable.
I've been programming my UV-5R with my Win 7 64-bit computer and CHIRP for over 2 years.Would anyone have got CHIRP to work?
The Baofeng software appears to have serious problems with Windows 7
and I'd like to know if anyone has CHIRP working reading and writing to the UV-5R
in Windows 7?
This is a bug in the N5R-20 (& N5R-30) firmware. And to be clear, it is menu 8 (BEEP) which provides feedback when you press a key on the keypad, not the "Roger Beep".I also notice the Roger Beep has to be on to receive and or scan or even
listen to any frequency other than the channel when powered up.
Turn the Roger Beep off and it will only receive when you turn the radio on.
