Barricaded gunman at Indian Trail; one man dead
A gunman has barricaded himself inside a modular home in the Indian Trail subdivision off Metcalf Road in Burtchville Township.
The call came in at about 6 a.m. this morning.
It began as a call for a domestic dispute but that quickly changed to a shooting at the 6772 Ojibway St. unit.
One man was found dead outside the residence and one is still inside.
St. Clair County Sheriff's Capt. Barry Brockdorff said a woman and a young child were found outside the residence and were taken to safety. Brockdorff did not give out the names of the people involved.
Sheriff's deputies have established a perimeter around the unit, and Brockdorff said the department will continue to "negotiate and talk ... and calm him down -- we don't rush to conflict."
He said the public is safe, but not every resident of the subdivision is able to return to his or her house.
Outside the perimeter Steve Henry, 37, sat in his Ford Explorer, unable to return home after working the night shift at Mueller Brass in Marysville.
"Yeah, it makes me worry. There's a lot of kids that live in this area. You walk past these houses every day. You don't expect this (kind of violence) so far out of town," he said.
Henry said he's going to go to his mother-in-law's house on North Road in nearby Clyde Township where his two girls, 11 and 9 years old, spent the night.
The Burtchville Township Fire Department rescue and Tri-Hospital EMS are standing by.
