I am looking for a base scanner to monitor two trunked systems about 60 miles away but not sure what to get. Right now I am using a RS mag mount antenna and a Pro-95. With that I can monitor one system most of the time and the other system I can hear a voice channel or two in manual. I am going to set up a discone in the attic with a preamp and run RG6QS or 9913, which ever I can find the best deal on. The scanner could actually be a handheld or a base/mobile but it will only be used at home. I am looking for a scanner that does a good job on Motorola systems and alpha tagging, I guess anything else would just be candy. I just wanted to know your guys recommendations.

Thanks,
Robert

You should go with the new Radio Shack Pro-2096. The reception on the scanner is great. You will not be disappointed.

Robert,
I think you have to look at the distance you are trying to cover here. That's quite a hop for 800MHz if that's what the trunked systems are using. The Pro-95 is a good scanner but to reach that far you may have to get a good hi-gain directional antenna and get it up pretty high to pull those signals in. I doubt a discone in the attic will help that much. I say keep the Pro-95 and invest in a good yagi antenna which you can point at the systems you are trying to hear.

One system I can monitor now, some of the time, with a Pro-95 and a RS mag mount (replaced the coax with RG6QS) on the headboard of a waterbed. With a discone in the attic with some good coax don't you think I should be able to pick it up almost 100%? The other system does not come it that well and if this setup picks it up it would be great but if not I won't be disappointed. I would like to use a discone because it is so wideband and I am going to use it for other VHF/UHF monitoring.
