I just bought a 436 and I cannot get Sentinel to install at all on any of my computers. If I were to use Freescan would that serve to update the radio software as well as install the counties that I want?

No...
You need Sentinel to update the database and firmware.
(And ProScan is a alternative / better choice to do the rest...)

Why does it not install?

As nessnet says, Sentinel should install on your computer. And that’s got value to it because it allows access to the Radio Reference Database, where all the programming data is stored. If you were to purchase ProScan or Butel ARC, you’d also need to pay for a premium membership to RR in order to use RR to program your scanner. I don’t believe FreeScan has a link to RR. (The cost to become a premium member of RR is very reasonable but it’s another cost you need to add on to the total cost of monitoring… the cost of the software (Butel or PROSCAN) and a subscription to RR as compared to Uniden’s free Sentinel software which comes complete with access to RR programming.

Sentinel requires Net Framework 2.0. You need to search for Windows Features and turn on Net Framework 3.5 which includes Net Framework 2.0. Restart your computer and try installing Sentinel again.

What error messages (if any) are you seeing? Which version of Windows?

Have you tried following the steps on this Wiki page?

Which boxes under them should be checked. Started with a solid black but expanding the selection showed a mixed bag of options. Turned everything on and still can't get Sentinel to see my BCD436HP. Was working a few weeks ago but suspect recent Windows updates both 10 and 11 broke something.

Sentinel is running on your computer which means that you already have the .NET Framework 2.0 enabled. If it wasn't enabled then Sentinel won't even start.

To all those of you who responded, I am most grateful. It turned out that all I had to do was turn off one of my malware apps by "trusting" the Sentinel software. Then I was able to program the update and put in as a favorites list only those talk groups/freqs. that i wanted. All is good now.
