Anyone know a source for a Bearcat BC245 backup and restore utility? I was looking for one by Aaron Rosetto, but all the links I can find to it are dead. Are there any others? TIA.

If that's the same utility I wrote about in my Strong Signals review, the instructions aren't always as clear or easy as they should be. Here's the review, and -at least I think, anyway - a bit easier set of instructions on how to use it are included;

Of course, when I wrote that review, there weren't too many programs that supported the 245. Now there's many choices, and having a good backup would be as easy as downloading the contents of the scanner and moving the resulting data to a safe spot. But this program does do what it advertises, and these days, that's all one can ask for.

Thanks Mike and '92b. I remember this utility from a long time ago, but I hadn't used it in a while. I wonder if it's useable with Windows XP, I can't get it to work. I followed the instructions given by Mike on the link, but the program says "incorrect response to MDL query" when I try to get data. I also tried an old copy of Winscan, but I couldn't get that to work either. Maybe I'll try putting thse on a Windows 98 machine and see what happens.

When you are ready to actually download, you must be FAST with hitting OK. If not you will time out; I had that happen a couple of times without really knowing why the heck it did that.
It must have something to do with the timing of how long the software waits before it gets an ack from the scanner; in any case, it's very frustrating to follow the directions, and still have problems. Believe me, I know :wink:
If you don't get with the Backup or Winscan to work, I would get the Lite version of Scan Control (I think it's only USD15 or so). I've had very few problems with using that with the 245, and it's very easy to dump the contents of the scanner. The lite version is programming only, and you can upgrade it very simply if someday you find the need to do that.
P.S. I just thought of something, and it's a common mistake; have you set up the 245 so that the serial port is set to run? It's not set up out of the box, you MUST do this before you can run any software on the scanner. The most common speed to set it up is 9600 baud; there doesn't seem to be much advantage to running it faster, unless the software is actually set up to handle it. See pp70-71 in your owner's manual

Thanks Mike, I may check out Scan Control. I was programming a BC245 for a friend, I was finally able to get WinScan to work. I basically read my BC245, and reloaded the same info back into his BC245.
