I am considering the purchase of a BC246T but have heard much about how the lettering comes off the buttons and case. Has Uniden done anything to address this problem with current owners and has it been corrected later units. I hesitate buying one until this is fixed.

The 246 is not the radio that has that problem.
It does have a problem with text rubbing off of the buttons. My Hold/Scan key is mostly unreadable.

I agree that it is the 396T with the silkscreen issue, but that is a case lettering...

My BC246T has the lettering rubbing off of some of the buttons as well. I have posted questions regarding the same thing back when there was a BC246T "Official Forum" but never got an answer. I haven't contacted Uniden either though so they may fix it with warranty repair, but I assume that the lettering will come off again. BTW, I programmed my 246 solely using the ARC246 program. The only time I use the keys is for light, power, and holding for the most part.

There was a problem with the early models, I haven't heard anyone note it lately.

I've had one of the first units off the boat and haven't had any ink rubbing off. Using it daily, plenty of programming by hand.

Don't let the worrying hold you back from this great little radio.

I just emailed Uniden an hour ago with a question on the 246 print rub off. I received an email back just now and was told it was covered under the 1 year warranty and they will be emailing me a shipping label.

I first tried to send the email to customerservice@uniden.com but it returned undeliverable. I had to send the email to one I used for my BCD396T, SKoch2@uniden.com . I was going to trade or sale the scanner for a mobile type scanner, but I will have it repaired first. I have to say, they wasted no time in replying to my email :D

Well guys, I have packaged up my BC246T and it will be taking a ride to Uniden tomorrow. Scheduled a pickup through FedEx. I figured it would be better to get it fixed than to leave it looking as pitiful as it does now. I didn't contact Uniden before because I just assumed everyone would have the same problem but it seems that only a select number actually have the problem just like on the BCD396T silk print.

I hope I get the BC246T back as fast as I got my BCD396T back. It took 14 days total (including weekends) for my BCD396T to travel to and from. The 396T even went through S. Carolina on it's trip from Texas to Arkansas. Never did figure that out.

Oh well, here I go again.

I can not read any of the buttons at all any more. Still a great scanner. Would buy again.

Thanks for the info guys. Guess I'll go ahead and buy one and hope I'm lucky enough to get one that doesn't have the problem.

It is a great little scanner, I can't deny that. I really like the 246T. But since I got the BCD396T, I haven't used it much except at the house as a base hooked to the outside antenna.

Send it in for repair. It is just a keypad replacement. The 396t's keypad has what looks like a coating over the keypad buttons.

I have been using the portable BC 246, and nothing has fallen off the buttons. I'm quite satisfied with the unit.
