To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

As any one else had any problems tracking the 400MHZ area with the 296? I cannot get this rig to track Luke AFB? My Pro96 didi it all day long without a hitch. On page 51 of the manual ,it states that VHF is from 148-406 and that UHF is from 450-512. In the Vhf mode it will not take the 406.000 base Freq setting? in Uhf mode it will take the Base setting but will not track it? When I try to put in the base freq in Vhf it refers to 137Mhz. not the 148 as stated. Would appreciate any help!

If the 296 is similar to the 250 in setting up a 400 Mhz trunked system then in the menu there is a choice for a 400 UHF (forget what the manual says in this respect).

You will also need to set the spacing, offset and one other setting. Normally this is available in the RR database.

I actually had a bit more of a problem with my Pro-96 when I forgot to set the 'table' for the 400 trunked.

Anyway the 400 MHz systems are not considered VHF.

Mike,

If you have access to a computer, use the included Uniden software to program this stuff in....makes it a cakewalk. Bit of a hassle to program manually.

I'm here a lot
Skylab,
Are you familiar with UHF trunking using a base freq. offset and spacing?

After you select the bank you want you must enter that criteria which is
listed at this link:

http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=TRSDB&sid=630

Your scanner probably defaults on the 406.0000 for the base freq., if
it is not change it to that and press E
Next, set the spacing to 25.0 ,if your scanner is not defaulted to that number, make sure you scroll through and find 25.0 press E.
Enter the spacing.

Now you are ready to enter the freq. for the system.

Press SEARCH, you should start picking up TG's now.
