Hello again,

The first item on the download page is the program / control software (free) from Uniden. When you enter your E-Mail address, a "unlock code" will be sent to you (no charge).

The second item on the download page is the file for the firmware.

The third item on the download page is the Firmware Update Program.

The fourth item on the download page is the scanner's protocol listing.

To update the firmware, you need the second and third items. Before you run the update, make sure that your Web Browser didn't rename the firmware file extension (.scn) to something else (like .txt). If it did change the extension, just rename it back to .scn.

You probably don't need the scanner protocol unless you want to write your own software for the scanner.

The USAD programming / control software is useful to program the scanner with.

Run the Firmware Updater in "Guided" mode.

problems downloading UASD and firmware loader/prgm

I'm having problems (compressed file is corrupt) when I try to extract the firmware loader pgm and the latest firmware update from the uniden site.

Also, the UASD program is some "MGI VideoWave4" program?? Am I missing something?

Hello Vhilts,

It sounds like your computer may be suffering from a "browser Hijack" problem. This can be caused by several different types of spyware. AdAware (by Lavasoft) and Spybot Search and Destroy (by Safer Networking Limited) are a good place to start. Mocrosoft's Anti Spyware also is worth looking at. If these won't work on your problems, it may be time for your computer to visit the repair shop.

if you're downloading the firmware updater utility, after the downoad is complete, you need to rename to .exe and remove the .zip extension. I ran into this problem also.

Both the UASD and the updater are exe programs - no extraction of any sort is required. If your browser renames them, rename them back.

The updater data file (the actual firmware) is a ".scn" file. Again, rename it if your browser named it something else.

I'm just about ready to spend the "big bucks" on a 396, but have some questions. I would be too paranoid to try to update the firmware. I'm not that computer smart, and I have an old PC with lousy dial up internet. Is there a new version of the 396 that does not need the updates? How do you check the version? Turn on, push ?, etc? What does the firmware improve? I did notice that one had to do with audio that sounded important. I just hate to spend so much money, and then not be happy. Thanks in advance for your replies!

Firmware Upgrade

Hello,

I don't think that you have to worry that much about the upgrade process itself. If you have an older computer, that means that you probably have one or more "real" serial ports. The hardest part of the process will be to download the updater and firmware from Uniden's Web Site. While you are there, you should also download the USAD software (free). You will have to enter your E-mail address, and they will send a key to you to unlock it. Maybe you could go to a friend's home and download the files you need from their system. Once you have the files, Try running the USAD software first, to figure out which serial port to use. Once you know which serial port to use, run the updater in "Guided" mode and everything should go smoothly. It should take about 5 minutes. Don't turn off the scanner even if the computer says it is done, the scanner will turn itself off when it is done. The only problems I have heard about are that some Web Browsers will rename the firmware file from ".scn" to ".txt" or something else maybe. Just rename it back to ".scn" and everything should be OK. The updater and USAD program should be self extracting .EXE files. If you have any questions before you start, just ask.

for those of you who normally use the Firefox browser like moi -- don't, if you're planning on downloading anything from the Uniden site, including firmware updates/loaders/protocols... IE however (with all of its security holes, which is why I don't use it) works fine, as I can attest...

fyi, firefox did no renaming of files, there was no spyware problem..firefox just doesn't like running executables blindly from an unknown site, even if it is Uniden...but thanks to all for the suggestions

so, other than standing on my left foot, looking over my right shoulder at the moon at midnite, removing batteries, pressing l/o and 6 simultaneously while plugging in AC power, and saying 3 hail mary's, it was a snap to upload v1.09... ;>)

BC396T Firmware Update

I just installed the latest firmware update (1.09) and yes it does seem to improve the decoding of Motorola P25 systems. Thanks for all the helpful information.

Download the software and firmware load from Uniden's site (http://www.uniden.com/rn_productsupport_downloads.cfm). Install and run the updater software and follow the on-screen directions. There is a firmware update mode that you put the scanner into to initiate the update.

Note that neither of the files are "zipped" as delivered from the web site. However, some browser settings will cause the files to be downloaded with either a "zip" or "txt" extension. To ensure the file is properly downloaded, make sure "All File Types" is selected in your save window when downloading from the site (or, rename the file back to the original name shown on the site after downloading).
