Sometimes when Im listening to my scanner I get, for example 42.3800 but only am hearing one side of the conversation. Ive tried my scanner in search mode and scan mode,is there a better way to track both sides of the conversation?

Who is it you're trying to listen to?

I know a lot of public safety that is still using the VHF-Low band (30mhz to 100mhz) is using what's called split channels.

Dispatch transmits on one frequency while units transmit on another totally different one.

For example, The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) in my area or District is setup like so....

Dispatcher to Units: 42.1200 mHz
Units to Dispatcher: 42.1800 mHz
Units to Units: 42.2000 mHz

Everything is "simplex" but they're using split frequencies. I know it seems crazy. I never really understood WHY they do it that way, but apparently they have several things in place that allow them all to be heard.

So first what agency are you trying to monitor, and then we can go from there, because I'm sure someone out there knows the other frequencies being used.

the freq I mentioned is the hwy ptrl in NC.A family member is in the A.L.E. based out of charlotte.I heard him on 42.3800, but recently I heard him being replied to and could not hear him answer.I have many freqs programmed in my scanner and have changed the delay setting several times trying to set up to catch both sides.I dont think they have talkgroups in place,or at least I have yet to catch one in search mode.Im not sure what the activity ID setting is,do you?

Activity ID is going to be a trunking feature...

If they're using low band (42-45mhz) then it certainly IS NOT going to be trunking..

Trunking is only on vhf-high, uhf, 800mhz and 900mhz only.... Any of the trunking features in your menu are going to be USELESS for 42mhz..
The below is all of NC highway patrol... And most of them are on VHF-LOW...

42.3800 and 42.5800 are the two frequencies used together...

Click on this link to see ALL of the freqs used by the NC Highway Patrol. Find your district on the color coded map and then match it with the frequencies for that district below... Also set the delay to ZERO or no delay. Do not put a delay on the low band frequencies or else you'll miss the other side of the conversation. As soon as one person unkeys the scanner will need to go right back into scan in order to pick up the other side of the conversation on the other freq.

Try just scanning between 42.3800 and 42.5800 with no delay. According to that link I'm giving you it seems to be the dispatch to car and car to dispatch pair for a lot of areas. Camden, Bertie, Duplin, Pender, New Hanover, Brunswick, Guilford, Rockingham, Mecklenburg, Union (Patched with Charlotte-Mecklenburg TRS).

what I meant to say was take your scanner and program 42.3800 into one channel, and then 42.5800 into another channel and scan between those two channels with no delay.

I'm sure you'll begin hearing both sides soon enough.. and again. go to that link I sent you, which happens to be the Radio Reference Database listed at the top of this site...

Oklahoma

Our Highway patrol in oklahoma is the same way. you can hear the dispatch fine but unless your within about 5 miles of the OHP unit, you cant hear his side of the traffic. alot of time there are repeater relays that will repeat the lowband traffic so the dispatch and everyone else can hear! once you figure out what agency your trying to listen to, you might check to see if the have any relays in your area.
