Look at the FCC codes as in YP GP etc... YP is most assuredly trunked. May not be any activity on it yet,...

You cannot just search between two frequencies, hit trunk and expect the scanner to do the rest. You must have some specifics on the system you want to monitor first. Radioreference can help out a lot with respect to this.

This may not be too relevant because we are talking about a 785D here, BUT...

Just FYI, with a 296D (and, I presume, the 796D) you CAN do something very similar to what is described above if your interest is limited to Motorola systems and is not limited to a specific talkgroup or user.

When you set up a search range, you set TRUNK to On in the search menu. Then you search. When the scanner finds a Motorola control channel (not other brands) it will start trunking immediately (don't even have to hit TRUNK!). If any activity is present on the system, it will track the conversations. When traffic ends, the scanner will continue searching the frequency range you selected to try to find another active Motorola control channel and automatically beging tracking it too. It's a very cool feature on road trips, and was a nice addition in the upgrade from the 250D/785D to the 296D/796D.

Have you tried taking your 785 mobile? Maybe go someplace that has a known system. Maybe roll up towards Turlock or even Sacto and see if you can get those systems to work. You will hear things that sound like trunking control channels throughout the bands, however not all will in fact be trunked systems. There are many other data formats which will sound like the famous chainsaw. Try searching the other bands too i.e. 405-420, 450-455, 460-465, 482-493, 851-869, and 935-940MHz. I find systems through most of these bands in most areas, so don't limit yourself to just 800.

Maybe it is just me but I find the 785D easy to understand. The system is not hard to program if you read the manual. Also look at the fresno database on radioreferance.com they have three listed try entering them like they say to in the manual and get a good antenna. With a crappy antenna you will not be able to pick up much.
