BC898T opinions?

I'm considering buying a BC898T to replace a 780XLT. I don't really need the alpha tags, so that's not a problem. I really like the top mounted speaker and tuning knob on the 898T. Performance wise, how do these 2 scanners compare (especially on the milair bands)?

I think you'll be satisfied with the BC898T. Be sure to buy a new one as some of the first generation ones had minor issues. You shouldn't have to pay more than $200.00 for a new one. I know you're into Mil-Air, and the BC898T performs very well on that band.

Consider getting ScanControl software for the BC898T. It works very well and will give you the alpha/numerical tags on your computer (if you want them), and adds other features such as logging, and recording.

If you get one print out page 46 & 47 of the BCT-8 so you will know which of the 4 plans to use when you set the radio to CC only. Plus it will give you info on the EOT setting. There are 8 options you can get to with the VFO knob. #4 is ON/OFF but have no idea what it is for, but if I turn it OFF it will not trunk. Hope this helps.

Thanks. I used to have an 895XLT years ago and that was REAL HOT on the VHF Low Band. I couldn't believe it! Hopefully, Uniden used the same design on the 898T. I ended up selling the 895XLT since it wouldn't "switch AM/FM modes". As you mentioned, I'm a big milair listener!

Frank before you jump on the 898 you may want to consider the BCT15.

Hey Frank!
I own the 898T. I love it. I too like to tinker in the mil-air areas. You WILL NOT be disappointed there. The BCT-15 is also a great performer but if you are coming from a 780,then an 898T will be plug and play as far as use is concerned. The BC-15,while a great radio, will take you some time to get used to if you are used to a 780. I would definitely recomend the 898T for the simplicity of use especialy if you are monitoring mil-air. Either radio is a good choice,but I think the 898T will suit your needs better.

As eluded by another poster, the manual leave much to be desired.
Some of the buttons are multi-function and not very logical.
