What's the Red thingy around the case in the front ? Occasionally when I run across them, frequently the knobs are broke or missing and the stand is broke or missing altogether. I suspect the knobs disappear from Dropping the scanner. :(
It is electrical tape for decor. I like to add a little color to an otherwise dull looking black case. I sometimes paint the screws red too. LOL..
This one was in good shape except for the broken pot. The seller had no idea it could be repaired.

Absolutely. Lighting is definitely key. My hand is pretty steady.
100%. I used to do a lot of soldering of CB microphone plugs as a teenager in the late 80's early 90's. The 4 and 5 pins used on Cobra radios and others were fairly easy but the DIN plugs for Realistic CB's were a challenge as the pins were extremely close together. I would insert thin strips of cardboard between the pins to prevent soldering two pins together. I had a good technique but now I'm many years out of practice.
