Just turned on my scanner after changing batteries. Opening Screen says “Load Test Data”

Lost all my channels and am unable to do anything with the keypad.

Read the manual. Reset by pressing keypad did not work because keypad was unresponsive.

Opened case and blew air over ic board.

Keyboard became responsive. Completed a reset.

Am now loading up last backup through XT with fingers crossed.

Still do not understand root cause.

I believe the reset process that requires turning the radio on while simultaneously pressing two keypad buttons allows the radio to enter the reset mode (in the bios?) where all user memory is, in effect, erased and all privious settings are set to default. That would include any keypad setting that had been locked. I’m thinking your success probably had more to do with you divorcing power to the unit when you disassembled it in order to blow air over the circuit boards.

Perhaps. But it was still displaying the same test mode during disassembly and stopped after I blew and restored power to the unit.

Ah, you didn’t state all the pertenants... if it was still under warrenty it could have been returned. But I didn’t catch if that was the case, my apologies if I missed that. If and when you do learn the cause, please post it. Most curious.

Most likely you jiggled the ribbon cable between keypad and motherboard during disassembly, and that resolved an open connection. That's the most common cause for unresponsive keypads, and in most cases removing and reseating the cable in the connectors resolves the problem.

No need for apologies. I’m at fault for not painting the full picture.
IF I do determine the root cause, I will post it as part of this thread. My focus was possibly the internal memory. However, I removed the batteries and let it sit for a while, and after re-inserting them, all is still good.
