Actually, someone I totally trust is testing one, and is NOT impressed. Bummer, because I decided against the 96, and was waiting for the 396.

Jerry

Keep in mind that the scanner your friend has is a demo only. The final product could be a whole lot different.

Your friend likely signed an agreement that said he would tell nothing about the radio to anyone, regardless of how much he trusts you... In any case without specifics that statement is meaningless.

12 alpha units have been under constant evaluation for over a month. Started with firmware v7.02 and are now at v9.15 (released firmware will use a different numbering scheme, so don't use these numbers to ask "do I have the latest firmware"). Lots of changes, improvements, tweaks, and additions over the course of the alpha period. Not sure when you spoke to your friend that you trust, but I hope that he can trust you...a very specific clause in the test agreement prohibits discussing the performance of units during testing specifically because these test units won't represent the final product performance or quality.

Wait for the mass produced units to go on sale to judge the product performance (Summer, 2005).

Explain how this can be true? Are the final production units going to be assembled from different components? If so, doesn't that defeat the purpose of the pre-testing with the alpha/beta units?

Just in case the "preliminary" report turns out to be true, I'm going to cancel my order because I don't want to end up with another lemon on my hands... I think I'll just wait until a few more beta testers... um, I mean lucky consumers that get the first batch! :) have a chance to get their hands on them before I part with that kind of moola.

HE said to much

I agree. I was thinking of selling my 246T and putting the money I get from that with the money I have saved and buy the 396, but now, I think that I won't.....At least not until the units have been out for a while, and I can get a good feel for how they are performing and how people like them.

Just my humble opinion, but it seems that a lot of folks are getting discouraged about this new product based on what a "friend of a friend" said. If his friend's expectations were a lot higher than the scanner was ever intended to be, then of course he'll be disappointed.

As for me, I'll have one to match the blue interior lights in my wife's VW! :D

Beta test units represent final construction and components. Alpha's do not necessarily represent this, as they are hand assembled, they incorporate sometimes preliminary parts selection that could be affected by alpha performance or initial parts availability (sometimes we have custom parts made for final production but use discrete off-the-shelf components in engineering samples), and they could have additional circuit changes that are identified as necessary during the alpha process. Additionally, firmware changes are made throughout the process in response to identified performance issues...there were several firmware versions that didn't impress me too much, but that is the entire point of testing different methods...try several and use the one that results in the best performance.

This is my last post in this thread...it has gone on long enough (too long, actually).

Ditto... I think the 396 is going to be a great product, and that blue backlight is waaay cool. Now I just need to get a VW to match it! 8)

Let's not discourage Uniden from participating in this site and from seeking users' input. I trust that "behind-the-scenes" Uniden is doing their job and wants to release a product that works.

This is how rumors get started, anyway. I'll wait until I see a final production unit, THEN I'll decide.
